Any remaining acid is eliminated by washing the nitrocellulose slurry in water and boiling it in an acidic solution. Various stabilizers are frequently added to the product to prevent it from degrading when exposed to light and heat. Nitrocellulose is normally kept and carried in water or alcohol to limit the risk of combustion.

When cellulose is treated with nitrating acid and used as a fuel or low-order explosive, they are created.
