India represented 7.2% of global revenue in 2025, equal to US$5.81 billion.

India is the world's second-largest fish producer and second-largest aquaculture producer. Government data show total fish output increased from 14.16 million tonnes in 2019-20 to a record 19.775 million tonnes in 2024-25.

Government investment remains substantial. PMMSY projects worth ₹21,461 crore had been approved by July 2026, while ₹2,500 crore was allocated for the program in FY2026-27.

The feed opportunity is being driven by shrimp, carp, tilapia, sea bass and intensification of inland aquaculture.

Skretting currently operates an automated aquafeed plant in Gujarat with initial capacity of 50,000 tonnes annually, producing higher-end shrimp and fish feeds.

Government programs are also promoting RAS, biofloc, cage culture, mariculture, hatcheries and feed mills, creating demand for more specialized nutrition.

Vietnam Aquafeed Market

  • Fishmeal provides highly digestible protein, essential amino acids and palatability. Its supply is constrained, however, which is encouraging manufacturers to use it more strategically alongside alternative proteins.

  • In some species and production stages, fishmeal inclusion can be reduced substantially. Complete replacement is more difficult because nutritional balance, digestibility, palatability and animal performance must all be maintained. The optimal inclusion level varies significantly by species.

  • Soybean and other oilseed meals are currently the largest alternatives. Insect proteins, microbial proteins, processed animal proteins and fermentation-derived ingredients are also gaining interest. OECD-FAO expects aquaculture use of oilseed meals to rise 37% through 2034.

  • Fish oil supplies EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids required for fish health and valued in the final nutritional profile of farmed salmon. Aquaculture is projected to consume 59% of global fish-oil supply by 2034.

  • Feed conversion ratio indicates how much feed is required to produce a given amount of animal weight gain. A lower FCR generally indicates more efficient conversion of feed into fish or shrimp biomass.

  • Feed is a major farm expense. Improving FCR can reduce feed consumption per kilogram of harvested fish or shrimp and can also reduce uneaten nutrients entering the farming environment.

  • Floating feed remains near the water surface for a period and allows farmers to observe feeding activity. Sinking feed descends through the water column and is better suited to species that naturally feed below the surface.

  • Neither is universally better. Extrusion provides greater control over density, digestibility and water stability and is widely used for floating feeds. Conventional pellets can provide better economics for species and farming systems that do not require those characteristics.

  • Functional aquafeed contains ingredients designed to provide benefits beyond routine nutrition, such as supporting immune response, digestive health, stress resistance or recovery during periods of elevated biological challenge.

  • Feed does not replace biosecurity, vaccination or veterinary management. Functional nutrition can nevertheless support immune condition and resilience. BioMar's 2026 SmartCare Defence, for example, is designed to support sea bass during periods of bacterial challenge.

  • In recirculating systems, waste remains within the water-treatment loop until it is removed. Feed digestibility, water stability and fecal properties therefore influence filtration, water quality and system efficiency.

  • The correct feed depends on shrimp species, production stage, stocking density, water conditions and farm objectives. Hatchery, nursery, grower and broodstock shrimp require different formulations.

  • Shrimp diets often contain high-quality proteins, marine ingredients, attractants, micronutrients and functional additives. Pellet stability and digestibility also require more sophisticated processing than many conventional terrestrial animal feeds.

  • Yes. Probiotic and prebiotic ingredients are increasingly used to support digestive health, microbial balance and resilience as producers reduce reliance on routine medicated feeding.

  • China is the largest individual market, accounting for an estimated 22.5% of global aquafeed revenue in 2025. China is also projected to consume 42% of global fishmeal supply by 2034.
