The Global grate-fired boilers were valued at US$ XX thousand in 2019 and are estimated to grow at a CAGR of 22.6% over the forecast period to reach US$ XX thousand by 2027
The term grate-fired boilers relate to 'Engineer, Procure and Construct.' The concept relies on an organization undertaking virtually all aspects of the project and provides a single point of communication and responsibility for the owner. The use of grate-fired boilers in the power generation industry has been continuously evolving over the last few years due to tremendous changes in this industry's business and technology areas. Almost all biomass-based power generation projects use grate-fired boilers.
All projects have to be time-bound to be profitable; however, the market still suffers from inherent delays due to various reasons, especially for the complex projects delayed because of feed sourcing or environmental clearance issues. The market also had a significant effect on the prevalence of pandemic globally. China is one of the prominent suppliers of grate boilers globally. Hence, the supply and manufacturing suffered a downfall, impacting the global market. Planned projects came to a halt and wholesalers were forced to reduce inventory.
However, with rapidly changing dynamics, the grate-fired boilers have significant potential in the future. With continuous hikes in high petroleum and natural gas prices and regulations on emissions continue to tighten, demand for biomass-fuelled plants is bound to grow. Many outdated boiler systems are prohibitively expensive to run in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Biomass can become a reliable renewable energy source to substitute conventional fossil fuels in local industries and reduce dependence on overloaded electricity grids. In this perspective, many agricultural, wood processing and food processing industries in developing countries and emerging economies are well placed to benefit.
Market Dynamics
Drivers
- Increasing investment in Power generation projects
- Increasing technological advancements to reduce municipal solid waste
Restraints
- Lower combustion efficiency and high cost of grate-fired boilers
Increasing investment in Power generation projects
Countries are becoming more concerned about energy supply and are investing massive capital in the power generation sector. With the increase in economic growth and population, the demand for more power output continues to rise, and as a result, the power generation sector is attracting huge investments globally. The high stakes in the power sector are expected to create lucrative opportunities for the grate-fired boilers market in the forecast period
The developing power generation alongside energy utilization interest drives the grate-fired boilers market's interest. The power generation benefits, including increasing government investment in renewables energy, are expected to support the market
Currently renewable and environmentally friendly energy source, biomass including organic non-fossil fuel and its utilization are gaining an increasingly important role worldwide, and grate-firing is turned out to be the leading competing technology in biomass combustion for heat and power production
Grate-fired boilers can quickly fire a wide range of fuels with varying moisture content and require significantly less fuel preparation and handling than other technologies. Thus, increasing shift towards renewable energy generation and advantages of grate-fired boilers technology are triggering the market of grate-fired boilers in the forecast period
For instance, growth occurred in thermal power, which is historically China's dominant energy source. However, Chinese renewable energy consumption has climbed to nearly 140 times that of the early 2000s. Hydropower and wind power, respectively, will account for roughly 6% and 26% of electricity output by 2050, according to the China Renewable Energy Centre
Geographical Analysis
The China grate-fired boilers were valued at US$ 2,033.41 thousand in 2019 and are estimated to grow at a CAGR of 18.6% over the forecast period to reach US$ XX thousand by 2027.
China is one of the highest producers of grate-fired boilers globally and exports plants and equipment globally. China is also the largest consumer of grate-fired boilers globally and, through private investment, raises maximum funds for plant installation globally. China Biomass energy has been developing at a rapid pace. The biomass power generation capacity in China accounted for almost 14.88 GW in 2017 and is planned to expand the proportion of biomass power up to 15% and the total installed volume of biomass power generation to 30 GW by 2030.
The huge market for grate boilers in the country lies due to the significant biomass resources in China, including waste from forestry, agriculture, industries, animal manure & sewage, and municipal solid waste. While the most important contributing sources are estimated to be debris from annual crop production like wheat straw, much of the stalk and straw are presently used for cooking and heating in rural households at low efficiencies. Therefore forestry residues, agricultural residues and garden waste were the most cited resources with immense potential for energy production in China.
Yearly, over 20 new plants are being established and new projects are always in the pipeline in China. Over 100 plants are operational as of now of straw fuel in China. Manufacturers such as DP CleanTech, a Denmark based boiler manufacturer, have completed almost 93 biomass power plant projects in China alone till March 2021.
In 2021, Chongqing Sanfeng Covanta Environmental Industry Co., Ltd., has been awarded 19 new contracts to supply grate systems with the MARTIN reverse-acting grate SITY2000, which include a new contract for Teckhand to supply 2 combustion systems with the MARTIN reverse-acting grate SITY2000 with a capacity of 600 t/d each in India. Also, the contract includes partially modernized line 1 of the Würzburg WTE plant, replacing the line upgraded to state-of-the-art technology.
The Chinese companies have been receiving orders from various countries globally. For instance, ZhengZhou ZhongDing Boiler Co., Ltd. has shipped Zhongding SZW series wood chips fired to the Philippines. The boiler is a double drum boiler with a membrane wall equipped with a customized reciprocating grate (can be designed as a moving grate, chain grate, and reciprocating grate) based on the requirement. It offers high thermal efficiency, low failure rate, and good steam quality and can burn different biomass fuel sources, including coal, straw, bamboo, bagasse, rice husk and others.
In 2019, the company will also export an 8 ton coal steam boiler to Pakistan. The boiler is a single drum chain grate boiler with chain grate combustion equipment. The boiler uses new scientific achievements, such as screw fire tubes, arch tube plates, to avoid low efficiency, insufficient output, and poor fuel adaptability.
In 2021, ZOZEN Boiler installed a set of steam boilers for a biomass power generation project of BİYOSAN ENERJİ ÜRETİM DANIŞMANLIK A.Ş in Turkey. The equipment accelerated the construction of a low-carbon recycling economic system for users. Some of the most recently established mixed fuel biomass grate-fired boilers in China are Anhui YuAn, Hebei Changli, Shandong Gaotang, Jiangxi Guixi and Guangdong Xinfeng.
