Vitrectomy Machines Market Overview

Vitrectomy Machines Market is estimated to reach at a CAGR of 9.3% during the forecast period (2023-2030). Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure undertaken by a specialist. In this procedure, the vitreous humor gel that fills the eye cavity is removed to provide better access to the retina. This procedure allows for a variety of repairs, including laser repair of retinal detachments, the removal of scar tissue and treatment of macular holes.

Vitrectomy Machines Market Dynamics

The increasing prevalence of retinal detachment vitreous hemorrhage, holes in the macula, and the rising geriatric population is expected to drive the Vitrectomy Machines Market

The increasing prevalence of retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, and holes in the macula is expected to drive the market

An emergency in which a thin layer of tissue (the retina) pulls away from its normal position at the back of the eye is called retinal detachment. The condition in which separation of the retinal cells from the layer of blood vessels that provides oxygen and nourishment is called retinal detachment. The longer the retinal detachment goes untreated, the greater risk of permanent vision loss in the affected eye. Per year retinal detachments affect between 0.6 and 1.8 per 10,000 people. About 0.3% of people are affected at some point in their life. It is most common in people who are in their 60s or 70s. Males are more often affected than females.

As part of the natural aging, often a macular hole develops when the vitreous gel thins out  and separates from the macula. This can pull the macula and cause a hole to form. These macular holes can also develop from injury, inflammation, retinal detachment, or other eye diseases. They can be successfully treated through vitrectomy. 7.8 out of 100,000 people in the general population get a macular hole. More than 97% of the total population of people who get macular holes are older adults: More than 50% occur in patients ages 65-74; 3% are under age 55. In addition, 72% of people with macular holes are female.

The incidence of Vitreous hemorrhage is seven cases per 100,000, which makes it one of the most common causes of acutely or subacutely decreased vision. Vitrectomy is also indicated for non-clearing vitreous hemorrhage, neovascularization of the iris and angle, or ghost cell glaucoma. Hence, the high prevalence rate of this disease and the treatment of vitrectomy is expected to rise the Vitrectomy Machines Market

The increasing geriatric population is expected to drive the vitrectomy machines market in the forecast period

The population of elder people in the U.S is increasing rapidly. By the year 2030, around 70 million American people is expected to be over 65 years of age. Among the elderly loss of vision is a major health care problem: about one in three elderly persons has some form of eye disease which may reduce their vision by the age of 65.

Vision impairment is also associated with a decreased ability to perform activities of daily living and an increased risk for depression. As a result, older adults are becoming an increasing and substantial part of the patient load of ophthalmology practices, consistent with demographic shifts. Despite this trend, few studies have analyzed age as a possible prognostic factor for vitrectomy, and those that have were inconclusive and dependent on the indication for surgery.

An estimated 1 million Americans over 65 years of age are associated with glaucoma because of which they experience the loss of vision. Because of glaucoma approximately 75 percent of persons who are legally blind are over the age of 65.

Side effects related to vitrectomy is expected to hamper the market

Due to the sutureless surgery and physics of smaller instruments, Small gauge vitrectomy utilizing 23- and 25-gauge instrumentation has definite advantages and limitations. A disadvantage is that greater instrument flexion than 20-gauge probes, making small gauge vitrectomy more appropriate for indications such as epiretinal membranes, vitreous opacities, macular holes, and simple retinal detachment. Some more complications related to small gauge vitrectomy include early postoperative hypotony, choroidal detachment, dislocation of cannulas intraoperatively and possibly an increased risk of infectious endophthalmitis. There is also a risk that the surgery is expected to not successfully repair the original problem.

An intraoperative massive suprachoroidal hemorrhage is one of the more feared complications for all eye surgeons. The incidence of suprachoroidal hemorrhage during vitrectomy surgery has been estimated to be 0.17 to 1.9 percent.

COVID-19 Impact On Vitrectomy Machines Market

Hospitals and medical practices have been affected during the COVID 19 pandemic due to several protocols. However, the ophthalmology procedures involved in this pandemic have been affected the most. As people are scared to undergo eye surgery due to the risk of COVID-19, there has been an impact on the Vitrectomy Machines Market

Vitrectomy Machines Market Segmentation Analysis

Probes are expected to dominate this segment of the market

A new vitrectomy probe featuring novel geometry and an ultra-high cutting speed is expected to enable vitreoretinal surgeons to perform manoeuvres with greater safety.Vitrectomy probes are always open and allow continuous constant flow, free from retropulsion. Fluid and vitreous are constantly aspirated into the port, enabling smooth aspiration without turbulence and traction on the retina. This allows to move the probe directly onto the detached retina without the fear of creating a break. No longer turbulent vitreous whipping can be seen. The use of probes has led to fewer iatrogenic breaks, even in surgical cases involving the macula.

Alcon designed its new Hypervit dual-blade beveled vitrectomy probe to enhance stability and control during micro incisional vitrectomy. The probe allows surgeons to modify the duty cycle and to control flow independent of vacuum and cut-rate, creating stable, closed-system intraocular surgeries.

Diabetic retinopathy is expected to dominate the vitrectomy machines market

Incidence of diabetes has been on the rise. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the leading cause of blindness among the working-age group, increasing numbers of persons being affected worldwide. It is a microvascular complication of diabetes that progresses to advanced disease in several cases. The microvascular complications of diabetes result in macular leakage or exudation and vasoproliferative retinal disease, which are the hallmarks of advanced DR.

In recent times, there have been significant improvements in preoperative care and evaluation and intraoperative surgical technique, including the administration of preoperative intravitreal pharmacotherapy, development of small-gauge transconjunctival instrumentation and availability of multifunctional vitrectomy probes with high cut rates. These advances have made the surgical outcomes more predictable and have resulted in an expansion of the indication for vitrectomy in managing the tractional complications seen in DR.

According to CDC, among adults aged 45 and over with diagnosed diabetes, 9.2% had vision loss due to cataracts, 4.1% had vision loss due to diabetic retinopathy, and 2.2% had vision loss due to macular degeneration, 2.1% had vision loss due to glaucoma.

The hospital segment is expected to dominate the market

Hospitals with their large scale, strong financial capabilities, and broad range of services is expected to see an increase in this segment. Eyes are special, and only a well-trained eye surgeon or a specialist should perform a vitrectomy on the patient for safe and accurate outcomes in the first attempt itself. Hospitals provide the best surgeons, healthcare facilities, and advanced vitrectomy machines for treatment. Hence, this segment is expected to dominate the market.
