Market Dynamics:

Increasing need of food security owing to rise in population

According to the International Food Policy Research Institute, almost 690 million people went hungry around the world in 2019, an increase of 10 million over 2018, and the COVID-19 pandemic could push an additional 83 milllion-132 million into chronic hunger in 2020, according to the 2020 State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) report, released July 13. State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World (SOFI) 2020 projects that 841.4 million people will be hungry globally by 2030 if these trends continue, and the world will not achieve its 2025 and 2030 targets of defeating malnutrition. According to the FAO Chief Economist, attributed these alarming findings to the unaffordability of healthy diets, noting that globally, 3 billion people lack the means and access to good nutrition. People are considered to have food security when they have access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food at all times to maintain a healthy life. Due to the continuous rise in population and limited cultivable land to suffice the growing need for food, there is less food security for the people. To fulfill the future demand for food, there is a need to increase food production across the world. In such a scenario, the use of crop protection products is inevitable. This situation has driven the growth of the crop oilseed protection chemicals market.

Moreover, the emergence of pests and diseases due to fluctuations in climatic conditions is expected to drive the market growth. Changes in climatic conditions have accelerated the occurrence and prevalence of plant diseases and pests. Climatic conditions have a major impact on oilseeds crop production and susceptibility to pests. Clubroot, Sclerotinia stem rot, and Phoma stem canker are the prevailing diseases commonly found in all oilseed rape producing regions, while light leaf spot and Mycosphaerella ring spot are mostly prevalent in Europe. The Aster yellows phytoplasma disease, only mentioned by the Canadian expert and considered as 7th most important biotic threat to oilseed rape production, has caused a 20–30% yield loss in 2012, while common losses in Canada were <1% in most other years. Therefore, any change in the climate leads to deviation in farming practices and this leads to a decline in productivity. Further, irregular rainfalls in various regions have led to rise in the fungal population. These key factors have increased the dependability of farmers on crop protection products for efficient pest prevention in oilseeds, which is fueling the global oilseeds crop protection chemicals market.

However, pesticides due to their persistent nature, toxic properties, bioaccumulation, lipophilicity, and adverse impacts on human health are of greater concern due to such residue problems. These pesticides enter the human body through consumption of contaminated fruits and vegetables. The major health impacts associated with pesticides residue include cancers, birth defects, neurological disorders, endocrine disruptors, and reproductive effects. The effect of a pesticide is determined by the duration of exposure and toxicity of a pesticide. The effects which can be caused are either acute or chronic. Due to the potential health risks associated with pesticide consumption, continuous monitoring of fruits and vegetables is required during farming.

Market Segmentation:

Herbicides are dominating the global oilseed protection chemicals market

Herbicides are substances that kill or inhibit growth of unwanted plants (weeds). They are widely used in weed control, which helps in enhancing crop productivity and quality of output. Herbicides help in reducing soil erosion and increase soil fertility and crop yield. They are used to control or kill unwanted plants and are often known as weed killers. Use of herbicides in agroecosystems may change composition of weed populations. In wildlands, herbicides may increase the diversity of native species. Threats to plant biodiversity caused by habitat loss and invasive species are far greater than threats by use of herbicides. Many farmers grow oilseed rape as a cleaning crop. This is because there is a wide range of herbicides available which will control weeds that are otherwise difficult to control elsewhere in the rotation, e.g., black-grass and brome. Rapsan, from Globachem is one of the key herbicides in oilseed rape weed control strategy.

By form, liquid is the segment which accounted for the highest market share as well as the highest growth rate in the oilseed crop protection chemicals. The growing requirement of liquid forms of crop protection chemical products, mainly in the foliar spray and seed treatment modes of application, is driving the market for liquid forms of oilseed crop protection chemicals. They are also cheaper than solid formulations and are easily mixed with any other crop enhancer or protecting product, increasing the demand for the same. Moreover, liquid forms offer a longer shelf-life with easy handling, transportation, and application. Also, they are cost-effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable. Companies are investing in the technological development of oilseeds crop protection chemicals in liquid forms. The liquid forms of oilseed crop protection chemicals can either be water-based, oil-based, polymer-based, or their combinations.

Geographical Penetration:

Increasing production of oilseed in Asia-Pacific boosts the demand for chemicals and pesticides

Asia-Pacific region is the most significant consumer of crop protective chemicals owing to the favorable condition of growing various crops. In this region, China is the largest consumer of pesticides; due to the increasing production of food, vegetables and other commercial crops. In addition, China practices year-round planting and harvesting, which has increased pesticide use, leading to soil contamination. Moreover, India is the largest producer of oilseeds globally. India's largest oilseed producing state is Gujarat. It mainly produces groundnut. - Rajasthan is India's top Rapeseed & Mustard producing state, followed by Madhya Pradesh and Haryana. In India, annual oilseeds are cultivated over 26.67 million hectares of area producing 30.06 million tons annually (quinquennium ending 2016-17. Assuming a normal 2020 monsoon season (June-September) and favorable weather conditions, India's total oilseed production in Marketing Year (MY) 2020/21 (October-September) is forecast to rise two percent to 38.4 million metric tons (MMT), averaging one metric ton per hectare. Due to the increasing production of oilseeds, the demand for oilseed crop protection chemicals is also expected to grow.

On the other hand, North America is expected to hold market revenue share of YY% in the year 2020. Soybean is the most produced oilseed globally, soybean production in the year 2016 was around 335 million metric ton. The major producer and exporter of soybean is the US, with a production of 117.2 million metric ton of soybean in the year 2016. Soybean has a lot of commercial importance as it is an important ingredient in the production of protein powder, soy milk, vegetable oil, etc. In the US, soybean is cultivated on 34.4 million hectares of land. The increasing production of soybean in the US is due to the increasing demand for bio-fuel which is used for producing combustible engine oil. This is further expected to drive the demand for crop protection chemicals in the region.

COVID-19 Impact:

Exclusion of agricultural activities under essential category made the global oilseed crop protection chemicals market resilient to the pandemic

As the agricultural practices were exempted from all the restrictions, the demand for agrochemicals was not impacted. But during the first half of the pandemic, the sales of the fertilizers slightly declined due to disruptions in trading activities, while the sales of crop protection chemicals like pesticides weren’t much impacted. In terms of supply, a short-term shortage of migrant laborers amid distribution bottlenecks created a wide gap between the number of workers required for the production of agrochemicals and the ones available. The production of crops also decreased due to the unavailability of laborers in large-scale plantations. Many fertilizer and pesticide manufacturers were facing issues due to lack of raw material availability, which has led to the reduction of various agrochemical product manufacturing. Post COVID-19, the agricultural activities have normalized, which has helped the companies to deliver products to target locations.
