Market Dynamics: Drivers

Increasing prevalence of sports injuries

The rising prevalence of sports injuries propels the market growth. For instance, according to the National Institute of Health, about two-thirds of the injuries are reported in soccer, handball, basketball, and volleyball, although only one-third of all sports club members are registered in these team sports. The number of women's soccer injuries has risen from 7.5 to 15.6 %. Ankle injuries have decreased from 28.7 to 16.9 %. By contrast, the rate of knee injuries has increased from 18.4 to 20.3 %. Days of disability have dropped steadily since the 1990s. Inpatient hospital days have decreased from 10 to 5 days, whereas the share of injuries that needed surgery increased from 30 to 40 %.

In the EU, sports injuries account for around 6.2 million people annually needing hospital treatment with 7% (402,000 cases) having to be admitted for further treatment. Team ball sports account for 42% of all hospital-treated sports injuries, with 71% of these linked to football. Every minute, on average, four people get injured during sports activities in Germany, summing up to around 2,000,000 sports injuries annually in Germany.

Restraints

Factors such as shortage of skilled professionals are expected to hamper the market. First and foremost, a shortage of trained practitioners, such as sports physicians, physiotherapists, and athletic trainers, limits player's access to specialist care. This shortage can cause delays in diagnosis and treatment, affecting athlete's performance and recovery durations. As a result, the overall quality and effectiveness of sports medicine services might decline, obstructing the value provided to both professional and amateur athletes.

Segment Analysis

The Europe sports medicine market is segmented based on product, application, and end-user.

The segment body support and recovery accounted for approximately 45.8% of the Europe sports medicine market share

The body support and recovery segment is expected to hold the largest market share over the forecast period. In this segment, technological developments would drive this market. In sports medicine, recovery is the process of returning the body to its normal physiological and psychological state after exercise or injury. Recovery is important because it helps athletes avoid fatigue and muscle soreness that could impact their performance.

Physical restoration includes recovering muscles, the elastic system, and other systems like the cardiovascular, hormonal, immune, metabolic, and nervous systems. Body support involves braces. For instance, in July 2024, Germany-based startup New4med launched its basivertebral nerve ablation (BVNA) therapy in Europe. BVNA is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at relieving chronic lower back pain by targeting the basivertebral nerve. The 30-minute procedure uses radiofrequency energy and a probe inserted through a small incision that destroys the nerve and prevents it from transmitting pain signals.
