Market Overview

Underpads, also known as Chux, are super absorbent pads designed to protect the mattress from urine damage. The pad is placed above or below the linens (personal preference) and absorbs leaking liquid. Moreover, underpads are often used to protect the skin of patients who are incontinent. These products effectively absorb moisture and present a quick-drying surface to the skin. In addition to wearable incontinence products, disposable underpads can be used for backup protection, though are not recommended for use as a sole protection against incontinence. Available in a variety of absorbencies, underpads offer bed and furniture protection and can also be used during general procedures and wound care. Underpads can be used in hospitals as well as at home. They are widely used in hospital beds where continuous or intermittent absorbing of fluid is required. These products are very popular in all developed countries and in India; they are imported for retailing purposes. However, their application is limited due to lack of knowledge about the benefits of such products.

Regional Analysis

Germany has been challenged by ever-rising health care costs, which now consume 10.4 percent of the country’s GDP. But it has been more proactive than most countries in seeking new ways to rein in those costs. Health insurance has been mandatory in Germany since 2009. About 10 percent of the population has private health insurance, the premiums for these plans vary based on each patient’s risk factors. Tax subsidies are used to finance approximately 10 percent of healthcare services. In addition, patients are required to make out-of-pocket copayments for many services, including drug prescriptions, employers underwrite the cost of a few services, and there are a handful of other, minor sources of funding.

More than 85% of the German Population is covered by social health insurance that is compulsory for the entire population, for up to a certain gross income per month, which is about EUR 4,125, or an annual income of EUR 50,850. Social Health Insurance (SHI) is provided by 145 independent, not-for-profit sickness funds. SHI premiums are based on a fixed percentage of gross salaries or wages (14.6%), split between employers and employees (7.3% each).

The German health care system is funded by government and private contributions. The public system is largely financed by wage deductions, with the rest coming from government subsidies. Only about 12 percent of the population has a full private health insurance, while the majority of residents are covered by the public health insurance system. But more than 20% of the publicly insured population have additional private health insurance to improve their health care. Since, the German population has many healthcare benefits the market of disposable underpads will grow rapidly in the country.
