Tubular membranes are not self-supporting membranes. They are located on the inside of a tube, made of a special kind of material. This material is the supporting layer for the membrane. Because the location of tubular membranes is inside a tube, the flow in a tubular membrane is usually inside out. The main cause for this is that the attachment of the membrane to the supporting layer is very weak.

Tubular membranes have a diameter of about 5 to 15 mm. Because of the size of the membrane surface, plugging of tubular membranes is not likely to occur. A drawback of tubular membranes is that the packing density is low, which results in high prices per module.

Tubular Membranes Market Dynamics and Trends

Increasing guidelines and regulations on wastewater discharge and rising technological advancements, and rising importance on decreasing the capital and operating costs of ZLD systems using membranes are the major drivers impacting the market growth. Environmental regulations create a demand for companies to cut effluent volumes, economics also plays a major role for the market growth.

One of the most effective approaches to dealing with some or all of these issues is crossflow membrane filtration technology. The technology can achieve a reduction in the volume of wastewater by a factor of typically 5-10 times and sometimes much higher. It offers potential savings on effluent charges, produces a stream of clean water, solvent, or process fluid that can often be reused within the facility, and frequently yields retained waste material, uncontaminated by waste treatment chemicals. Adding to this, Pentair has introduced different technologies such as ultrafiltration, nanofilteration, microfiltration with compact 27, 33, and 33V products into the market.

However, high capital expenditure for ZLD systems and high usage of thermal separation systems are hindering the market growth

Tubular Membranes Market Segment Analysis

By end-user, the tubular membranes market is segmented into food & beverages, chemicals & petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, power & energy, electrophoretic coating, leathers & textiles, and others. The global tubular membranes market size by end-user was worth USD YY million in 2018 and is estimated to reach USD YY million by 2026 in the forecast period. Food and beverages are expected to hold a high CAGR rate in the market. Membrane technology has been used in the food industry for more than 30 years.

In the food industry, there is an increasing awareness that tubular membrane systems can be easily integrated into an existing process line and provide a useful concentrate and a valuable filtrate or permeate at the same time. The membrane technology can be applied to several production methods, including milk-solids separations in the dairy industry, juice clarification and concentration, concentration of whey protein, sugar, and water purification, and waste management. Companies are focusing to introduced new advancements in the market. For instance, PCI membrane has introduced different solutions and products, such as series tubular membrane modules, b1 series tubular membrane modules, and c10 series tubular membrane modules in various applications.

By application, the tubular membranes market is segmented into reverse osmosis, membrane bioreactors, and other applications. Other applications include nanofiltration, macro filtration. The global tubular membranes market size by application was worth USD YY million in 2018 and is estimated to reach USD YY million by 2026, at a CAGR of YY% during the forecast period. Reverse osmosis is a key segment of the tubular membranes market. Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification process that uses a partially permeable membrane to remove ions, unwanted molecules, and larger particles from drinking water.

Due to the zero-liquid discharge systems, the reverse osmosis segment is expected to grab a major share in the application segment. This process requires that a high pressure be exerted on the high-concentration side of the membrane, usually 2–17 bar (30–250 psi) for fresh and brackish water, and 40–82 bar (600–1200 psi) for seawater, which has around 27 bar (390 psi) natural osmotic pressure. Singapore established a process named NEWater would be a significant part of its water plans. It involves using reverse osmosis to treat domestic wastewater before discharging the NEWater back into the reservoirs.

Tubular Membranes Market Geographical Analysis

The North America tubular membranes market size was worth USD YY million in 2018 and is estimated to reach USD YY million by 2026, at a CAGR of YY% during the forecast period. North America is dominating the global Tubular Membranes market in 2018 and is estimated to hold the largest market size over the forecast period owing to the rising regulations on end-use industries towards wastewater discharge, causing the demand for ZLD systems and ultimately tubular membranes. For instance, The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established categorical pretreatment standards for at least 35 categories of industrial dischargers. Regulations and permits require treating industrial waste streams for defined industries before the water is discharged to the sewer system. Adding to this, increasing demand from the various industries is estimated to drive demand in this region.

The Asia pacific tubular membranes market size was worth USD YY million in 2018 and is estimated to reach USD YY million by 2026, at a CAGR of YY% during the forecast period. Asia Pacific is estimated to grow with a high CAGR rate in the forecast period. It is expected to be a fast-growing region for tubular membranes owing to speedy industrialization, huge investments, and growth in the manufacturing industry which fuel the requirement for water usage.  For instance, an Indian company, in August 2019, Reliance has announced that they are about to sell a 20% stake in oil-to-chemicals biz to Saudi Aramco. Furthermore, in July 2019, PepsiCo has announced that it will invest USD 131 million to acquire a 26% stake in Natural Food International Holdings Limited, one of China’s largest natural health food companies.
