Thoracic Catheters Market Size

The Global Thoracic Catheters Market reached US$ 418.48 million in 2023 and is expected to reach US$ 691.80 million by 2031, growing at a CAGR of 6.3% during the forecast period 2024-2031.

The thoracic catheter also known as a chest tube is a plastic tube used to drain fluid or air from the chest, which can cause lung collapse if it collects in the pleural space between the lungs and chest wall. It can be inserted during a surgical procedure or at the bedside with local painkillers and sedation.

Chest tubes come in various sizes and shapes and are connected to drainage systems that collect fluid and allow air to escape the chest. Chest tube placement is indicated in conditions like pneumothorax, hemothorax, chest trauma, pleural effusion, post-operative use, etc. Factors such as rising prevalence of thoracic conditions, rising healthcare expenditure on emergency care are rising number of surgical procedures are expected to drive the market growth.

Thoracic Catheters Market Dynamics: Drivers

Rising prevalence of respiratory conditions

As the global population is rising especially the old age demographic who are at a higher risk of severe respiratory conditions such as pneumothorax, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder) and have higher chances of hospitalization which increases the demand for immediate intervention through chest tubes. In addition, changes in lifestyle factors in the current modern world, such as smoking, environmental pollution, and sedentary lifestyle may contribute to the development of respiratory conditions concurrently increasing thoracic disorders and rising the demand for thoracic catheters.

For instance, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), by 2030, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder will be the third leading cause of mortality in the world with 90% of the deaths accounting for low- and middle-income countries. As per the recent statistics available, approximately 3.9 million COPD-related deaths were accounted for in 2019.

Moreover, on December 7, 2023, an epidemiological study published in the JAMA Network Journal stated that by 2050, the total COPD prevalent cases globally will reach 592 million from 480 million in the year 2020, with a rise in 112 million cases. The study has also estimated that by 2030, the COPD prevalence cases will reach 532 million rising by 52 million within a span of 10 years.

In addition, rising healthcare expenditure on emergency care, rising technological advancements in chest tube delivery, and increasing surgical procedures are the factors that are expected to drive the market growth.

Restraints

Although chest tube insertion is a standard treatment modality for thoracic disorder, it may cause severe complications in patients such as infection, bleeding, or organ injury. These risk factors may limit the use of chest tubes for weak and critically ill patients. Moreover, the availability of alternative treatment options like needle aspiration, and thoracentesis may restrain the thoracic catheter market growth.

Thoracic Catheters Market Segment Analysis

The global thoracic catheters market is segmented based on material, size, indication, end user and region.

The small bore in the size segment accounted for approximately 68.4% of the global thoracic catheters market share

Thoracic catheters popularly known as chest tubes are majorly used to drain out fluid or accumulated air from the pleural spaces. These chest tubes are majorly indicated for pneumothorax treatment, where this fluid accumulation is majorly seen. These chest tubes come in various sizes ranging from 8Fr to 40Fr (French Units) and are intended for various purposes depending on the patient's needs. Generally, a tube size less than 20Fr is considered a small bore and any size more than 20Fr is considered a large bore.

Many studies conducted to evaluate the therapeutic benefits of both sizes have revealed that there is very minimal difference in the efficacy between large-bore and small-bore, but, small-bore tubes are non-invasive, unlike the large ones which are highly invasive. Hence, small-bore chest tubes are widely used in the clinical setting to manage moderately ill and active patients with pneumothorax. According to the British Thoracic Society guidelines, small-bore thoracic tubes must be used for the initial management of pleural effusions or infections.

Additionally Cook, a major player in the market, upon review from multiple clinical studies has favored the use of small-bore catheters for pleural drinage, as they cause minimal discomfort to the patient, induce less pain, and are also easy for placement.

Moreover, on January 26, 2023, an article published in JAMA Surgery Journal stated that small-bore chest tubes are widely used for the management of patients with pneumothorax which is highly prominent among the indications of chest tube insertion. Moreover, small-bore tubes are the first line of treatment for pleural effusions and simple empyemas. Large-bore chest tubes are limited to critically ill conditions such as hemothorax, and complex empyemas.

In support of this, on August 8, 2023, an article published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information stated that most pneumothoraces patients can be treated by using small bore pigtail chest tubes. Only the large pneumothoraces should be treated using large-bore chest tubes.

Thoracic Catheters Market Geographical Analysis

North America is expected to dominate the market with 45.2% share in the global thoracic catheters market

North America is expected to dominate the market due to its advanced healthcare infrastructure, with state-of-the-art healthcare facilities across the region. Pneumothorax or hemothorax requires immediate care, which can be provided by emergency care or trauma units. The major countries in the region, the U.S. and Canada are well-known for having highly efficient, well-equipped, and easily accessible emergency and trauma units. As per statistics published in September 22, 2023, by Definitive Healthcare, LLC there are approximately 10,200 emergency care clinics across the U.S.

Moreover, U.S. is the top country that spends the highest share of its GDP on healthcare.

For instance, on January 31, 2023, the data published by The Commonwealth Fund highlights the following points:

  • From 1980 to 2021 (latest data available) U.S. has led the healthcare sectors in terms of expenditure. In 2021, the U.S. spent 17.8% of its GDP on its healthcare sector, which is far higher than any other high-income country in the world.
  • In 2022, the U.S. has the highest per-capita spend on healthcare expenses with $11,192 which is almost triple to per-capita spending in Japan, South Korea, and New Zealand, and almost double the spending in Australia, France, and the Netherlands, etc.

Moreover, the U.S. is the third most populous country in the world with a growing elderly population who are at a higher risk of COPD, and asthma which accounts for almost 70% of secondary spontaneous pneumothorax. As per American Lung Association data, there are approximately 11.7 million COPD, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema patients in 2022.

With the well-advanced healthcare infrastructure, the U.S. has the capability to handle the majority of traumatic pneumothorax and hemothorax patients. Moreover, with the availability of major manufacturers of chest tubes in the region, access to these devices is almost indispensable. These are the major factors contributing to the region’s highest market share.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis On Thoracic Catheters Market

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the global market for thoracic catheters. The COVID-19 infection led to conditions like pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome and respiratory depression, which is the major reason for mortality in infected patients. These severely ill patients were managed by providing mechanical ventilation which is a major exacerbating factor for pneumothorax. The pneumothorax can be managed by only chest tube insertion.

Several conditions are known to cause secondary spontaneous pneumothorax and recently, Covid infection has become one of those pneumothorax exacerbating conditions. The pandemic has led to the death of approximately 7 million people worldwide, and managing respiratory depression has become the center of care for these severely ill patients before their deaths. As per DataM analysis, the market for thoracic catheters had positive growth during the pandemic.

For instance, on April 20, 2022, a retrospective study published in the National Center for Biotechnology Information stated that during the pandemic the incidence of chest tube insertion has increased. However, the tube insertion has also led to increased mortality of the patient, if they already have existing acute respiratory distress syndrome.
