Shotcrete/Sprayed Concrete Market Overview

The Global Shotcrete/Sprayed Concrete Market is estimated to reach at a high CAGR during the forecast period 2026-2033.

Sprayed concrete or Shotcrete is concrete conveyed through a hose and pneumatically projected at high velocity onto a surface. It undergoes placement and compaction simultaneously because of the force with which it is projected.

It can be impacted on any type or shape of the surface, including vertical or overhead areas. Steel or synthetic fiber reinforcement is used to stabilize applications such as slopes, tunneling and swimming pool shells.

Sprayed concrete has extensive applications such as strengthening, repair and slope stabilization, new construction, underground construction such as storage reservoir, tunnel linings; water retaining structures and others. It can also be used in recreational construction such as swimming pools, zoo structures, landscaping and theme parks.

Today, sprayed concrete application in tunnels, mines and other civil engineering structures is an essential and integral part of successful, highly productive, and safe rock support systems.

Shotcrete/Sprayed Concrete Market Dynamics

The introduction of robotic concrete spraying machines is expected to drive the market

Recent innovations and developments in robotic technology in manufacturing industries have led to robotic concrete spraying machines, either stand-alone nozzle manipulators or fully integrated pump and nozzle units. An integrated robotic shotcrete machine, its compact arrangement has been designed for maximum maneuverability in confined spaces in mining, tunneling and other shotcrete applications with limited access and workspace. It requires no manual handling of hoses, leading to increased productivity.

The Canadian company, RDH Mining Equipment, launched its Roboshot 600 shotcreting rig. The Roboshot 600 is a self-propelled mobile concrete sprayer, which optimizes concrete spraying in mining and tunnel projects with variable tunnel cross-sections. It has a highly maneuverable boom and can place up to 30 m3/h of shotcrete.

Shortage of skilled labor is expected to hinder the shotcrete market

The shortage of skilled laborers for various construction activities is the major restraint in the growth of the shotcrete concrete market. All commercial and residential builders face shortages of labor. During the recession, several skilled construction workers left the industry when finding work was challenging. The problem has reached such a vast scale that the stunted growth in the industry has caused the builders financial crisis.

As per The Wall Street Journal, the growing shortage of labor in the commercial real estate sector drives some project costs up. Moreover, an annual survey by the National Association of Home Builders revealed that around 75 percent of builders had to pay higher wages and bids, 64 percent had delayed projects, and 68 percent had raised home prices. Thus, a shortage of labor can hinder the growth of the market in the forecast period.

Shotcrete/Sprayed Concrete Market Segmentation Analysis

Based on processes of application, sprayed concrete is categorized mainly into wet-mix and dry-mix processes.

In the wet-mix process, fluid material is pumped to the air injection nozzle. Wet-mix has the advantages of achieving better material consistency through off-site mixing, producing less dust, and achieving more significant volumes in a given time. Whereas dry-mix processes have the disadvantages of producing more dust, and a more significant proportion of the material ends up on the floor as a rebound.

Atlas Copco, a Swedish multinational industrial company Meyco ME5 wet-mix spraying rig, offers optimized admixture accuracy and less rebound. Blastcrete Equipment Co., a US-based company, manufactures wet shotcrete pumps and mixer/pump combinations that safely handle everything from high-volume shotcrete installations to low-volume concrete repair applications underground.

Moreover, Normet bought the Meyco dry shotcrete spraying business from Atlas Copco. The move added to the company’s existing wide range of wet-mix shotcrete equipment, such as the Spraymec 5070 VC, which Normet launched with a Tier 4F engine.

Global Shotcrete/Sprayed Concrete Market Geographical Share

North America region stands to be the largest market for sprayed concrete owing to the growing construction industry. For instance, the construction industry added more than $900 billion to the US economy in the first quarter of 2020 and employed 7.64 million people in February 2020, the highest level since 2008.

However, US infrastructure is overstretched and lagging behind its economic competitors, particularly China. In the US, delays and rising maintenance costs are holding economic performance back. In addition, many bridges are structurally deficient. Hence, president Biden has put forward an ambitious $2 trillion plan to overhaul US infrastructure. In addition, a growing number of infrastructure projects are organized as joint efforts between government and private developers, known as public-private partnerships, or P3s.

Getman, a US-based company, produces a range of concrete spraying and transport vehicles that provides a complete solution for transporting, spraying and pouring concrete in underground mining applications. In April 2019, Getman introduced its newest model of concrete transporter, the A64 HD A 70. It is equipped with a multisection chute with hydraulic assist for accurate concrete discharge and can be supplied with a heavy-duty engine or transmission packages for moving concrete loads on steep grades.
