Ethylene-Vinyl Alcohol Copolymer Films Market Size

The global ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) films market was valued at US$2.13 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach US$3.89 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 6.2% during 2026-2035. Food packaging accounted for 42.5% of the current EVOH barrier-film market, while Asia-Pacific represented 38.2% of 2025 revenue under the latest market benchmark.

The strategic position of EVOH is changing. Historically, it was primarily selected because of its exceptional oxygen and aroma barrier, particularly in meat, dairy, sauces, coffee, and other shelf-life-sensitive foods. The next growth cycle is being shaped by a different requirement: how to maintain high barrier performance while reducing the complexity of flexible packaging and keeping the final structure compatible with polyethylene or polypropylene recycling streams.

This distinction is becoming commercially important in 2026. Kuraray received APR Design® Recognition for EVAL EVOH in February, demonstrated PPWR-compatible mono-material structures at interpack in May, and continues construction of an 18,000-ton-per-year Singapore plant intended to strengthen Asian supply. At the same time, the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation generally became applicable on August 12, 2026, making packaging design and recyclability increasingly important procurement considerations rather than longer-term sustainability ambitions.

Current broader EVOH segmentation places the 35-38 mol% ethylene-content range at 28% of 2025 demand, reflecting its useful balance between barrier performance and processability.

The Market Is Moving from Maximum Barrier to Minimum Barrier Material

The economics of EVOH are different from those of a conventional packaging polymer. Polyethylene or polypropylene typically provides much of the package's physical structure, while EVOH is added as a thin functional layer primarily to control oxygen and aroma transmission. This means the commercial objective is not to maximize the amount of EVOH used, but to obtain the required shelf life with the lowest technically sufficient EVOH loading.

Kuraray states that current PE-based packaging can deliver the required barrier with typically only 3-5% EVAL EVOH, and that structures containing less than 6% can remain within major recyclability guidelines. APR testing also demonstrated compatibility of qualifying PE structures containing significantly higher EVOH percentages under defined conditions.

This materially changes the value proposition for packaging companies. A very thin layer can help replace structures containing aluminum foil, PVDC or more complex multi-polymer combinations while maintaining oxygen protection. The winning material is therefore not necessarily the one with the lowest resin price, but the one that allows the converter to simplify the complete package while preserving shelf life and processing reliability.

Recyclability Is Becoming the Strongest New Demand Catalyst

EVOH has historically faced a perception problem because multilayer packaging is frequently associated with poor recyclability. The industry's response has been to demonstrate that the barrier layer can be sufficiently thin to remain compatible with selected PE and PP recycling systems rather than treating every multilayer structure as automatically non-recyclable.

Kuraray's February 2026 APR Design® Recognition is a significant commercial development because it confirms that qualifying EVAL EVOH structures can meet APR design-for-recyclability criteria within polyethylene film streams. Kuraray's subsequent 2026 technical communication states that its downgauged structures can use less than 6% EVOH while maintaining barrier performance, helping brand owners remain within APR, RecyClass and CEFLEX design frameworks.

Mitsubishi Chemical is pursuing the same opportunity through SoarnoL. Its polyethylene-based multilayer structures containing up to 10 wt% SoarnoL received RecyClass Technology Approval in October 2025, while earlier APR and How2Recycle assessments confirmed recyclability under specified structures.

For packaging procurement, this means EVOH is increasingly moving from being viewed as a recycling complication to a potential enabler of simplified high-barrier polyolefin packaging, provided the complete structure is designed correctly.

PPWR Turns Structure Design into a Commercial Issue

The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation entered into force in February 2025 and generally applies from August 12, 2026. It places greater emphasis on packaging design, composition, recyclability and waste reduction, accelerating the shift away from structures that perform technically but are difficult to recover at end of life.

EVOH benefits when it replaces a more recycling-disruptive barrier while remaining a small fraction of an otherwise PE- or PP-based structure. Kuraray's interpack 2026 portfolio explicitly positioned thin EVAL layers as a route toward PPWR-compatible mono-material packaging, including shrink films and bags for fresh meat.

The implication for film converters is practical. Customers will increasingly ask not only whether a film achieves a target oxygen transmission rate, but also how much non-polyolefin material is present, whether the structure has been evaluated against recognized recycling protocols, and whether packaging fees or EPR obligations can be reduced through redesign.

Food Shelf Life Remains the Core Economic Argument

Sustainability regulation is creating new growth, but food preservation remains the primary reason EVOH exists commercially. Oxygen can accelerate oxidation, discoloration, flavor loss and microbial deterioration across meat, cheese, sauces, coffee, prepared meals and numerous other products.

Food packaging therefore accounted for 42.5% of the EVOH barrier-film market in 2025, making it the largest individual application.

The material can create value well beyond the packaging itself. Extending a food product's saleable life can reduce retailer write-offs, improve long-distance distribution and lower food waste. For products with relatively high value per kilogram, even a modest reduction in spoilage can outweigh the incremental cost of adding a thin EVOH barrier layer.

This relationship is why food will remain the industry's dominant demand pool even as pharmaceutical, personal-care and industrial applications grow.

Fresh Meat and Cheese Remain Especially Attractive Applications

Fresh meat represents one of EVOH's strongest use cases because modified-atmosphere packaging and vacuum-packaging systems require strong gas control. Multi-layer structures can combine polyethylene's sealing behavior, polyamide's toughness and EVOH's oxygen barrier, allowing meat products to remain protected across longer distribution networks.

Current PA/EVOH/PE film benchmarking shows fresh meat and poultry at 36.28% of 2025 application demand, followed by dairy and cheese at 22.94% and processed or ready-to-eat foods at 20.98%.

Kuraray is directly targeting this market with EVAL SC grades designed for shrink films and bags. The company's current focus is not only high oxygen barrier but also orientability and shrinkability, allowing converters to produce packaging that conforms tightly around meat while being designed for recycling.

These applications provide particularly strong economics because package failure can compromise a relatively expensive food product, making reliable barrier performance more valuable than minimizing resin cost alone.

Retort Packaging Expands the Performance Ceiling

Retort and sterilization applications are significantly more demanding than conventional chilled-food packaging. A material needs to retain barrier performance after exposure to high temperatures, moisture and mechanical stress, conditions that can weaken less robust film structures.

Kuraray's current work around advanced food-processing systems shows EVOH-containing structures maintaining low oxygen transmission after high-temperature processing and long storage periods. This expands the opportunity from ordinary chilled packaging into ready meals, shelf-stable foods and other high-value formats where replacing cans, glass or foil-heavy packages can reduce packaging weight.

For film suppliers, the commercial opportunity lies in proving post-processing barrier retention, not merely quoting initial OTR values. Buyers evaluating EVOH for retort applications need data after sterilization, flexing, distribution and storage because this is where practical package performance is determined.

EVOH's Main Technical Weakness Is Moisture

EVOH's barrier performance comes largely from its dense molecular structure and strong intermolecular bonding. This provides exceptional resistance to oxygen and many other gases under dry conditions.

Water changes the equation. EVOH is hydrophilic, and rising humidity can reduce gas-barrier performance as absorbed moisture increases molecular mobility. This is why EVOH is rarely used as an exposed standalone food-packaging layer.

The standard commercial solution is multilayer engineering. EVOH is placed between moisture-resistant polymers such as PE, PP or PA so the external structural layers protect the barrier resin while also delivering sealing, stiffness or toughness.

This weakness is not expected to prevent market growth, but it ensures that film architecture and tie-layer compatibility remain as important as EVOH resin chemistry itself.

Multi-Layer Films Remain the Commercial Backbone

Multi-layer EVOH films accounted for roughly 65% of the broader EVOH barrier-film market in 2024, reflecting the practical need to combine the material with structural, sealant and moisture-protection layers.

Five-layer structures remain commercially important because they provide a relatively efficient PE/tie/EVOH/tie/PE architecture. More sophisticated seven- and nine-layer films allow additional PA, sealant or functional layers to be added when puncture resistance, thermoforming, retort or other performance requirements justify greater converting complexity.

The strategic direction, however, is not necessarily toward more layers. Modern coextrusion technology can use a greater number of extremely thin layers while still reducing total packaging weight, but recyclability pressure simultaneously favors fewer resin families within the finished structure. Future innovation will therefore focus on functional precision rather than simply increasing laminate complexity.

Ethylene Content Determines Where Each EVOH Grade Competes

The DataM market divides EVOH films into below 27 mol%, 27-32 mol%, 32-38 mol%, 38-44 mol% and above 44 mol% ethylene content.

Lower ethylene-content grades generally provide stronger oxygen barrier but can be more sensitive to moisture and more difficult to process. Higher ethylene content improves flexibility, moisture resistance and processability but reduces some dry-state gas-barrier performance.

The 35-38 mol% range currently accounts for 28% of the broader EVOH market, making it the largest single composition category in current benchmarking. Its commercial strength comes from balancing strong barrier performance with practical coextrusion and packaging-process requirements.

Rather than one composition replacing the others, suppliers will continue using grade selection as an application-engineering tool. Fresh meat shrink film, retort trays, cosmetic tubes and fuel-system components can require materially different balances of barrier, flexibility and processability.

EVOH Can Reduce Packaging Weight Without Reducing Shelf Life

The material-efficiency argument is becoming more important because packaging regulation increasingly rewards reduced resource consumption.

EVOH's extremely strong oxygen barrier allows the functional layer to remain thin compared with the structural layers around it. Kuraray states that EVAL's oxygen barrier can be up to 10,000 times stronger than polyethylene, enabling very small EVOH quantities to create a major change in package performance.

This is particularly attractive when the alternative involves aluminum foil or thicker multilayer films. If a converter can use less total plastic or eliminate another barrier material while preserving shelf life, the value of the EVOH should be evaluated against the entire redesigned package, not against the cost of PE or PP resin on a kilogram-for-kilogram basis.

That system-level comparison will increasingly determine where premium EVOH grades gain market share.

Fuel Tanks Provide a Different High-Barrier Market

DataM includes fuel tanks and containers as a distinct application because EVOH is also an effective hydrocarbon barrier.

Plastic fuel tanks commonly use multilayer architectures where HDPE provides structural strength and EVOH helps prevent fuel-vapor permeation. The application demonstrates the broader value of the polymer: barrier performance is useful not only against oxygen entering a package but also against volatile compounds escaping from a container.

This market differs from food packaging because product life is much longer and automotive qualification standards are considerably more demanding. Once approved, however, long model cycles can produce stable demand.

The transition toward battery-electric vehicles reduces the long-term addressable market for conventional fuel tanks, but hybrid vehicles, motorcycles, commercial vehicles and industrial containers should preserve a meaningful application base during the forecast period.

Pharmaceutical Packaging Raises Qualification Value

Pharmaceuticals represent a smaller volume segment than food, but barrier requirements can be more stringent and supplier qualification can be more durable.

Certain medicines, diagnostic products and medical devices are sensitive to oxygen, aroma transfer or chemical interaction. EVOH's transparency, oil resistance and gas barrier make it suitable for selected blister, pouch, tube and multilayer-container applications.

The commercial benefit is stronger supplier retention. Pharmaceutical packaging cannot be changed casually once stability testing and regulatory qualification have been completed, which can produce longer product cycles than many consumer-food packages.

Growth will remain selective because EVOH competes against foil, PVDC, COC/COP and coated barrier materials, but technically demanding healthcare applications can support higher value per unit of material.

Personal Care and Cosmetics Benefit from Aroma and Hydrocarbon Barrier

Personal care and cosmetic packaging uses EVOH where formulations contain fragrances, oils or volatile ingredients that need to be retained within the package while external oxygen or contaminants are kept out.

Mitsubishi Chemical currently positions SoarnoL for personal-care packaging as well as food, automotive and industrial applications.

Cosmetic tubes are particularly relevant because modern structures increasingly aim to reduce aluminum while preserving aroma, oxygen and oil resistance. EVOH can provide the functional barrier inside a largely polyolefin-based tube, helping brands simplify structures while maintaining premium product protection.

The segment should grow faster than basic rigid-packaging consumption because brand owners are simultaneously pursuing lighter packaging and improved recycling design.

Regional Analysis

Asia-Pacific Takes the Updated Market Lead

The current DataM page still identifies North America as the largest regional market and Asia-Pacific as the fastest-growing region.

More recent 2025 EVOH barrier-film benchmarking places Asia-Pacific first with 38.2% of global revenue, reflecting large packaged-food markets, rapidly growing flexible-packaging conversion and the concentration of chemical and polymer manufacturing across Japan, China, South Korea and the wider region.

The supply side reinforces the shift. Kuraray is constructing an 18,000-ton-per-year EVAL plant in Singapore, with startup targeted for the end of 2026, while its project communication in March 2026 confirmed that construction remained underway. The project carries an investment of US$410 million and was designed with front-end capacity that can support future expansion.

For strategic planning, Asia-Pacific should therefore be treated as both the largest incremental demand pool and an increasingly important global production center.

Japan Remains the Technology Center

Japan's importance to EVOH is greater than its domestic packaging market alone suggests.

Kuraray pioneered commercial EVOH under the EVAL brand in 1972, while Mitsubishi Chemical operates the globally established SoarnoL franchise. Together, Japanese suppliers hold a significant share of global technology, production expertise and intellectual property around high-barrier EVOH resin.

Japan's market also benefits from sophisticated food packaging, retort products, pharmaceuticals and automotive applications. Customers tend to place high value on quality consistency and process control, creating an attractive environment for specialty grades.

The country's strategic role through 2035 will therefore remain focused on material innovation and high-value product development, even as more incremental production capacity moves into Southeast Asia.

China Combines Packaging Scale with Material Localization

China has one of the world's largest packaged-food and flexible-packaging markets, alongside significant cosmetics, pharmaceutical and automotive production.

Demand for EVOH rises as local converters move from basic commodity film toward higher-performance packaging structures capable of extending shelf life and supporting longer distribution networks. The country's growing domestic food brands and e-commerce channels also increase demand for packages capable of maintaining quality across national supply chains.

China's long-term competitive dynamic will be localization. Global EVOH suppliers retain strong technology positions, but local polymer and film companies have incentives to reduce import dependence in strategic specialty materials.

Price competition should therefore become more intense while total market volume continues expanding.

India Is Moving from Imported Barrier Film Toward Larger Domestic Demand

India represents one of the strongest emerging EVOH packaging opportunities because packaged foods, dairy, processed meat, pharmaceuticals and personal care are all expanding.

Current trade data indicate that Indian EVOH packaging-film imports grew strongly between 2020 and 2024 despite year-to-year volatility, with China, Vietnam, Italy, the United States and South Korea among major supply sources.

The opportunity is particularly attractive for converters investing in seven-layer and other advanced coextrusion lines. EVOH allows manufacturers to produce vacuum bags, thermoforming films, retort packages and high-barrier pouches domestically rather than relying entirely on imported finished structures.

India should therefore become increasingly important not simply as a film-import market but as a local coextrusion and packaging-conversion market through 2035.

Europe Becomes the Key Regulatory Development Market

Europe's strategic importance comes from regulation and recycling design rather than raw consumption alone.

PPWR generally applies from August 12, 2026, requiring packaging companies to examine material composition, recyclability and resource efficiency more closely.

Kuraray used interpack 2026 in Germany to demonstrate mono-material PE and PP structures containing thin EVAL layers specifically in response to this regulatory transition. Mitsubishi Chemical's SoarnoL also received RecyClass approval for qualifying PE flexible-packaging structures.

Europe is therefore likely to determine many of the technical standards that influence global EVOH packaging design, even if Asia-Pacific generates greater incremental volume.

North America Retains Strong Food and Healthcare Demand

North America remains one of the world's largest EVOH markets because of its mature packaged-food, meat, dairy and healthcare industries.

The region also provided an important 2026 recyclability signal when Kuraray America received APR Design Recognition for EVAL EVOH. Qualifying structures can now give North American converters stronger evidence when developing PE-based packages intended for existing or emerging film recycling systems.

The United States also houses Kuraray's largest EVAL production site in Pasadena, Texas. This provides regional supply advantages for customers concerned about specialty-polymer availability and logistics.

Future growth should center on recyclable meat packaging, cheese, pet food, retort structures, healthcare applications, and foil/PVDC replacement rather than basic packaged-food penetration alone.

2026 Developments Reshaping the Market

Kuraray Earns APR Design Recognition for EVAL

In February 2026, Kuraray America received APR Design® Recognition for EVAL EVOH barrier resin, validating compatibility with polyethylene film recycling under specified structures. The development directly addresses one of EVOH's largest commercial objections and provides brand owners and converters with third-party support when developing recyclable high-barrier PE packaging.

Kuraray Positions EVOH Directly for PPWR-Compatible Packaging

At interpack 2026, Kuraray demonstrated ultra-thin EVAL barrier layers within PE and PP packaging designed around recyclability requirements. The company also highlighted SC grades for recyclable fresh-meat shrink films and bio-circular EVAL grades intended to support Scope 3 reduction strategies.

Singapore Capacity Moves Toward Startup

Kuraray confirmed in March 2026 that construction of its new Singapore EVAL production facility was progressing. The US$410 million plant is designed for 18,000 tonnes per year of initial EVOH capacity, with operation targeted for the end of 2026.

This is one of the market's most important supply developments because it creates a new Asian production base closer to many of the world's fastest-growing flexible-packaging markets.

Both Major Japanese Suppliers Increase Prices

Kuraray announced global EVAL price increases in March 2026, including US$0.50/kg in Asia-Pacific and the Americas and €0.55/kg in EMEA, citing elevated raw-material, utility and logistics costs. Mitsubishi Chemical also announced SoarnoL-related price revisions effective April 2026.

The simultaneous increases highlight an important procurement risk: EVOH remains a concentrated specialty-polymer market in which feedstock, energy and logistics costs can move pricing materially.

PPWR Becomes Applicable Across the EU

The EU PPWR generally became applicable on August 12, 2026, accelerating packaging redesign toward recyclable and resource-efficient structures. EVOH suppliers are positioning thin-layer PE and PP constructions as one route to meeting barrier needs without retaining complex traditional laminates.

Key Players

The refreshed competitive landscape includes Kuraray Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation, Chang Chun Group, SK Functional Polymer, Dow, Mondi, Amcor, Winpak, Coveris, Schur Flexibles, Korozo, Flair Flexible Packaging and other multilayer-film converters and specialty barrier-material suppliers.

The existing DataM page lists Mondi, Smurfit Kappa, Kuraray, Coveris, Winpak, Schur Flexibles, Mitsubishi Chemical, Flair Flexible Packaging, Korozo and Nippon Gohsei among key participants. However, the current market should be evaluated at two different levels: upstream EVOH resin producers that control barrier chemistry and downstream film/converting companies that determine how EVOH is incorporated into commercial packaging structures.

Kuraray - Scaling EVOH Capacity Around Recyclable Packaging

Kuraray has the strongest dedicated position in EVOH through its EVAL franchise. The company pioneered commercial EVOH in 1972 and now supplies food, medical, industrial and automotive applications from an established global production and technical-support network.

Its current strategy combines capacity expansion with recyclability validation. In February 2026, EVAL received APR Design Recognition in North America, and by May the company was promoting mono-material PE and PP structures specifically around PPWR requirements. Thin EVOH layers are central to this positioning because they deliver high oxygen barrier while keeping the non-polyolefin fraction low.

Kuraray is simultaneously increasing supply capacity. Its new Singapore plant has an initial design capacity of 18,000 tonnes per year and a US$410 million investment value, with operations targeted for the end of 2026. The front-end facility is designed for 36,000 tonnes per year, creating room for subsequent expansion if Asian demand develops as expected.

Kuraray's competitive advantage therefore extends beyond barrier performance. It combines global production, deep application engineering, recyclability recognition and the ability to help converters minimize EVOH loading while preserving shelf life.

Mitsubishi Chemical - Combining SoarnoL with Recycling Compatibilization

Mitsubishi Chemical competes through SoarnoL EVOH, a high-barrier resin used across food packaging, personal care, automotive, agricultural and industrial applications. The material combines oxygen barrier, transparency and oil resistance and is supplied through production assets in Japan, North America and Europe.

Its competitive strategy increasingly connects EVOH with recycling technology. SoarnoL structures have received APR, How2Recycle and RecyClass recognition under defined compositions, while the company's Soaresin compatibilizer is designed to improve the behavior of EVOH-containing structures within polyethylene recycling.

Mitsubishi also expanded SoarnoL capacity in the UK from 18,000 tonnes per year to 39,000 tonnes per year, with the expanded production scheduled to start in July 2025. This created a global production system closer to major European flexible-packaging customers.

The company is also extending EVOH beyond conventional film. In late 2025 it developed SoarnoL solution-coating technology for paper, combining gas barrier and oil resistance while positioning the material as a potential alternative to selected PFAS-based treatments.

This gives Mitsubishi a broader value proposition around barrier resin, recycling compatibility and new substrate applications.

Mondi - Converting Barrier Chemistry into Commercial Packaging

Mondi occupies a different position because it is primarily a global packaging producer rather than an upstream EVOH resin manufacturer. Its relevance lies in converting high-barrier polymers into commercial pouches, films, bags and other formats for food and consumer applications.

This downstream position is strategically important. Resin suppliers can achieve excellent laboratory barrier performance, but converters determine film thickness, tie layers, sealants, printing, lamination, recycling design and final package geometry. These choices determine whether EVOH performs successfully in the customer's actual packaging line.

As packaging moves toward recyclable structures, companies such as Mondi can influence whether EVOH gains or loses market share against AlOx, SiOx, coated paper, polyamide, PVDC or foil-based alternatives. The winning barrier material will increasingly be selected based on the performance of the complete package architecture, not the resin specification in isolation.

Mondi therefore represents an important route-to-market partner for specialty EVOH suppliers and an equally important source of substitution risk if alternative barrier structures become more attractive.

Winpak - High-Barrier Packaging Expertise in Food and Healthcare

Winpak is strongly exposed to food, beverage and healthcare packaging, making it an important downstream participant in EVOH-containing high-barrier films and rigid packaging structures.

The company's competitive strength lies in integrated packaging design, including multilayer films, thermoformed structures and healthcare packaging where oxygen barrier, seal integrity and processing consistency are critical.

This is particularly relevant to EVOH because many of the material's strongest applications—fresh meat, cheese, medical products and high-barrier thermoforming—require sophisticated coextrusion rather than commodity film production.

Winpak's market position illustrates a broader industry reality: downstream converters with validated coextrusion and customer qualification capabilities can capture substantial value even when the underlying EVOH resin comes from a relatively concentrated group of chemical manufacturers.

Strategic Takeaways

Recyclability Is Removing One of EVOH's Largest Historical Barriers

APR, RecyClass and related recognition is changing how packaging companies evaluate EVOH. A carefully designed PE or PP structure containing a thin EVOH layer can now be assessed as compatible with established recycling frameworks, making EVOH more attractive when replacing foil, PVDC or structurally complex packaging.

The Best Commercial Strategy Is to Use Less EVOH, Not More

EVOH is a functional barrier material rather than a bulk structural resin. Future value creation will come from grades that provide sufficient oxygen protection at thinner layer weights, allowing converters to reduce non-polyolefin content, packaging weight and potentially EPR costs while retaining shelf life.

Asia-Pacific Is Becoming Both the Demand and Supply Growth Center

Fresh market benchmarking places Asia-Pacific at 38.2% of 2025 EVOH barrier-film revenue, while Kuraray's Singapore investment adds a major new production base in the region. This should improve lead times and supply security for Asian converters while intensifying regional competition.

Food Will Remain the Largest Application, but the Mix Will Move Upmarket

Fresh meat, dairy, retort meals and premium shelf-stable foods create more attractive EVOH economics than applications requiring only moderate barrier. Growth should therefore be strongest where product value, food-waste reduction and extended distribution justify premium packaging.

Processing Expertise Is as Important as Resin Chemistry

EVOH's moisture sensitivity means film design cannot be separated from resin selection. Tie layers, structural polymers, coextrusion conditions and total layer architecture determine whether a technically strong EVOH grade delivers the expected commercial performance.

Supply Concentration Creates Qualification Risk

Kuraray and Mitsubishi Chemical remain particularly important global suppliers, and both announced price increases in 2026. Buyers with large barrier-film programs should therefore evaluate alternate grade qualification, regional sourcing and inventory strategy rather than treating EVOH as an interchangeable commodity.

PPWR Will Reward Proven Structures Rather Than Generic Sustainability Claims

European packaging buyers increasingly need evidence that a complete structure meets recycling and regulatory design requirements. Suppliers able to provide third-party recyclability validation, detailed layer-design guidance and processing support should gain a stronger position than companies marketing barrier performance alone.

Market Restraints

The principal technical limitation is humidity sensitivity. EVOH provides exceptional gas barrier in dry conditions, but moisture can reduce performance, requiring the barrier layer to be protected inside a multilayer structure. This increases process complexity and means EVOH generally cannot replace structural polymers by itself.

Cost is another constraint. EVOH is substantially more expensive per kilogram than PE or PP, while March 2026 price revisions from both Kuraray and Mitsubishi Chemical demonstrate ongoing exposure to raw-material, utility and logistics costs.

Competition is also increasing. AlOx, SiOx, PVDC, polyamide, metallized films, coatings and other high-barrier technologies can meet similar packaging requirements in selected applications. EVOH therefore needs to justify itself through the best overall balance of barrier, transparency, processability, recycling compatibility and total package cost.

Finally, recycling compatibility is conditional rather than automatic. Ink, adhesive, tie-layer, print and other package components still influence whether a final structure receives a favorable recyclability assessment. Material buyers need to qualify the complete packaging system rather than relying only on the EVOH resin's standalone approval.

Highest-Value Opportunities Through 2035

  • Recyclable PE/EVOH/PE packaging offers the strongest immediate opportunity as food brands redesign flexible packaging around polyethylene recycling streams.
  • Fresh-meat shrink films and vacuum bags remain attractive because EVOH provides critical oxygen protection while high product value supports premium barrier materials.
  • Retort and shelf-stable food packaging can create additional value where thin multilayer plastics replace heavier rigid or foil-dominant formats without compromising post-sterilization barrier.
  • Cosmetic tubes and personal-care packaging offer another growth path as brands reduce aluminum and transition toward polyolefin-rich structures while preserving aroma and oil resistance.
  • Pharmaceutical packaging provides a smaller but high-retention market where qualification requirements and long product cycles can protect supplier relationships.
  • India and Southeast Asia should provide strong new converter demand as seven-layer and other advanced coextrusion capacity expands closer to rapidly growing food and healthcare markets.

FAQ’s

  • The global EVOH films market is estimated at US$2.13 billion in 2025 and projected to reach US$3.89 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 6.2%. The sizing uses a current exact-scope EVOH barrier-film benchmark because the existing DataM page does not publish absolute market values.

  • EVOH provides extremely strong resistance to oxygen and aroma transmission, helping protect flavor, color and shelf life. Because only a thin layer is required, it can be incorporated into multilayer PE or PP packaging without becoming the main structural polymer.

  • Food packaging leads with 42.5% of 2025 EVOH barrier-film revenue, supported by meat, dairy, processed foods, coffee and other products that are particularly sensitive to oxygen.

  • Yes, qualifying structures can be compatible with PE recycling. Kuraray's EVAL received APR Design Recognition in 2026, while Mitsubishi Chemical has obtained APR and RecyClass recognition for specified SoarnoL-containing PE structures.

  • EVOH's oxygen barrier weakens as humidity increases. Placing it between moisture-resistant polymers such as PE or PP protects the barrier layer while other layers provide sealing, strength and puncture resistance.

  • Current broader EVOH market analysis places the 35–38 mol% range at 28% of 2025 demand. This range provides a commercially useful balance of strong gas barrier, flexibility and coextrusion processability.

  • Foil provides an exceptional absolute barrier but adds opacity and can complicate recycling in plastic laminates. EVOH can provide strong transparent oxygen barrier at very low layer thickness, making it attractive when brands want lighter polyolefin-rich packaging.

  • PPWR generally applies in the EU from August 12, 2026 and increases pressure to design packaging for recyclability and material efficiency. EVOH suppliers are using thin layers within PE and PP structures to help converters preserve barrier while simplifying packaging.

  • The Singapore EVAL facility adds 18,000 tonnes per year of initial EVOH capacity closer to major Asian packaging markets. The US$410 million project is targeted to begin operation around the end of 2026 and has front-end capacity designed for future expansion.

  • Kuraray and Mitsubishi Chemical both announced 2026 price revisions, citing pressure from raw materials, utilities and logistics. The increases reinforce the importance of downgauging EVOH layers and improving barrier efficiency rather than simply adding more resin.

  • The latest benchmark places Asia-Pacific at 38.2% of 2025 revenue, although the older DataM page still lists North America as the largest market. Increasing packaged-food consumption and new Asian EVOH supply support the updated regional position.

  • The most attractive opportunities include recyclable PE and PP barrier structures, fresh-meat shrink films, retort packaging, pharmaceutical barriers, cosmetic tubes and high-barrier packaging growth across India and Southeast Asia.

  • The key criteria are oxygen barrier at relevant humidity, ethylene-content grade, minimum effective layer thickness, coextrusion compatibility, recycling validation, regional supply capacity, technical support and total package economics. Suppliers that can help redesign the complete multilayer structure will create more value than those competing only on resin price.
What Our Clients Say About this Report
Stefan Müller

5/5
The report clearly explains why EVOH is becoming more relevant under PPWR rather than treating multilayer packaging and recyclability as opposing concepts. The analysis of thin barrier layers, APR and RecyClass recognition, supplier capacity and package redesign provides a practical basis for material-selection discussions.

5/5
The balance between technical depth and commercial presentation is particularly useful. The report connects ethylene content, moisture sensitivity and coextrusion design with the strategic moves by Kuraray and Mitsubishi Chemical, making the implications for future barrier-film qualification much easier to assess.
