Digital Watermarking Market Definition

Digital watermarking is the process of embedding identifiable information within digital content so that ownership, provenance, distribution source, usage or authenticity can later be identified.

A watermark may be visible, such as a logo placed over an image, or imperceptible, where information is embedded into the underlying image, video, audio or other signal without materially changing the user experience.

Digital watermarking should not be confused with digital fingerprinting.

A watermark modifies the content by embedding a signal, whereas fingerprinting derives a characteristic signature from the content without embedding information into it.
