Molluscicides Market Overview
The Global Molluscicides Market is estimated to reach a CAGR of 8.8% during the forecast period 2024-2031.
Molluscicides are the pesticides used for controlling mollusks (snails and slugs). The mollusc species have been noted to cause huge agricultural losses and has become one of the major threats. Damage caused by snails and slugs to crops varies considerably with the season and year. Snails and slugs are serious pests, especially of cereals such as wheat, barley, oats and oilseed rape, and also of ornamental and vegetable plants. They feed both above and below the surface of the ground, on seeds, seedlings, and plants, damaging shoots, roots, leaves, and flowers.

Molluscicides Market Dynamics
Increasing food demand and diminishing arable land
The global population is increasing exponentially, and every day, nearly 200,000 people are contributing to the global food demand and is projected to reach 9.2 billion by 2050. Supplying food to this growing population has become a global threat. Thus, crop protection is a key strategy adopted by farmers, to meet the global food demand. Usage of pesticides on crops is a proven technology, in order to increase the global food production. Huge demand for molluscicides has been seen from developing nations. People are now adopting every measure to increase crop productivity.
According to the UN Population Division, the largest population increase is projected to occur in Asia (particularly in India, China, and Southeast Asia), accounting for 60% or more of the global population, by 2050. Large quantities of crop protection chemicals are expected to be required in this region, in order to increase food production for the growing population.
Major manufacturing players have begun producing environment-friendly molluscicide products by utilizing natural and non-harmful by-products. There are no efficient biological controls to combat invasive mollusks. The application of synthetic molluscicides has a toxic effect on non-target organisms; it affects crop establishment and causes problems of algal blooms and pesticide residue. This gives rise to the need for botanical molluscicides as an alternative.
However, there is currently no effective, safe, and economically viable molluscicidal formulation. Platcom Ventures Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) developed a polyherbal molluscicide, which is an effective formulation to combat invasive mollusks, especially golden apple snails. In contrast to synthetic molluscicides that have a toxic effect on non-target organisms, this polyherbal formulation is a biological control method with low toxicity against non-target organisms and is also biodegradable.
However, regulatory restrictions on the use of molluscicides is expected to hamper the market growth to a certain extent. Different control methods are employed by farmers against slugs and snails, which causes significant damage to crops. When these measures are not found sufficient, chemical control options are seen as a last resort. Strict guidelines and frameworks are in place to prevent the rampant use of harmful pesticides due to their high toxicity levels and drastic effects on the environment when they enter food chains.
For instance, the European Union has banned the use of methiocarb slug pellets due to their hazardous effect on grain-eating farm birds such as finches and sparrows. The other major slug pellet product used is metaldehyde, which is considered an emerging pollutant and is more frequently found in watercourses above the EU statutory drinking water limit of 0.1 μg L⁻¹ for a pesticide.
Molluscicides Market Segmentation Analysis
Growing demand for plant derived molluscicides
Plant-derived molluscicides are nerve poison and trigger the CDC cells. The CDC cells in the brain of the snail control egg-laying. Thus, biochemical parameters such as protein, amino acids, and nucleic acids and cholinergic enzyme activity in snails are measured using poisonous doses of plant molluscicides. The plant molluscicides have great potential in decreasing the reproduction rate of snail and made significant changes in amino acids, nucleic acids and protein compared to control. Snail control with plant molluscicides has been an effective method for rapid and effective control of Fasciolosis. Plant molluscicides are gaining wide attention because they are effective, cheaper, safer for the non-target organism, easier to handle and environmentally acceptable. Natural products, predominantly plants, contain compounds lethal to pestiferous gastropods.
In addition, the toxicity of active molluscicide components is more potent than their synthetic counterpart. The use of these plant products against harmful snails has the added advantage as they are readily biodegradable, ecologically sound and more acceptable to native farmers and livestock keepers.
Molluscicides Market Geographical Share
Asia-Pacific is expected to dominate the global molluscicides market
Asia-Pacific region held highest market revenue share in the year 2020, and it is also the fastest-growing market during the forecast period. Emerging economies such as China and India play an important role in supplying active ingredients (metaldehyde) as raw materials to European and North American markets. Many mollusk species, especially snails and slugs, severe pests and cause imbalances in local ecosystems when introduced into new environments. In Asia-Pacific countries like India, molluscicides that carry active ingredients such as niclosamide, endosulfan, camellia seed residue and copper sulfate are often used to control golden snails. Global molluscicides producer has thus developed innovative and customized products based on regional requirements, particularly in the Asia Pacific region.
Molluscicides Companies and Competitive Landscape
The global molluscicides market is highly segregated with many players like Lonza, BASF SE, Amvac Chemical Corporation, PI Industries, and UPL among others. In August 2020, Marrone Bio Innovations announced Vive Crop Protection (Canada) to obtain active components in molluscicides market. Technology innovations, product launches, acquisitions, and R&D activities are key strategies adopted by players in molluscicides market.
For instance, in June 2020, ADAMA has launched a new ferric phosphate-based professional molluscicide aimed specifically at controlling slug populations in UK growing conditions. Gusto® IRON by ADAMA, is a 3% ferric phosphate molluscicide for use in cereals, oilseed rape, potatoes and a wide range of horticultural crops. Lonza launched a world leading molluscicide Axcela. It is manufactured by a wet-extrusion process. Combining the advantages of the specific mode of action of Meta Metaldehyde with the latest formulation techniques gives these pellets the highest levels of control against slugs and snails under a wide range of conditions.
COVID-19 Impact on Market
As the agricultural practices were exempted from all the restrictions, the demand for agrochemicals was not impacted. But during the first half of the pandemic, the sales of the fertilizers slightly declined due to disruptions in trading activities, while the sales of pesticides weren’t much impacted. In terms of supply, a short-term shortage of migrant laborers amid distribution bottlenecks created a wide gap between the number of workers required for the production of agrochemicals and the ones available. The production of crops also decreased due to the unavailability of laborers in large-scale plantations. Many fertilizer and pesticide manufacturers were facing issues due to lack of raw material availability, which has led to the reduction of various agrochemical product manufacturing. Post COVID-19, the agricultural activities have normalized, which has helped the companies to deliver products to target locations.
