Larvicides are the chemicals that are used to kill mosquitoes, biting flies, and other such larvae insects. Larvicide treatment of breeding habitats helps reduce the adult mosquito population in nearby areas. Larvicides may be contact poisons, stomach poisons, growth regulators, or (increasingly) biological control agents. Tablet, pellet, granular, and briquet formulations of larvicides are also applied by mosquito controllers to breeding areas and liquid larvicide products are applied directly to water using backpack sprayers and truck or aircraft-mounted sprayers. An increasing number of disease outbreaks, vector-based epidemics, and growing pest attacks are some of the major factors driving the larvicides market globally.

Market Dynamics:

Rising agriculture activities driving the growth of the market.

The growth of the agriculture sector is one of the main reasons driving the market growth. According to OCED, 70 percent of the world’s food insecure population lives in rural areas of developing countries and that many of them are small-scale. China’s imports of oilseeds are expected to rise by 40% over the next ten years, accounting for 59% of global trade. Larvicides controls malaria and other vector-borne diseases by controlling pests before they reach maturity, preventing them from breeding and spreading disease through new generations of insects. World Health Organization recommends the use of integrated control approaches to improve, control and elimination of malaria where larviciding is one of the most relevant approaches. The Department of Agriculture bases its selection on experience and research and includes factors of risk, economy and effectiveness and alternatives include water management, biological control and public education.

Market Segmentation:

Biocontrol agents segment accounted for the highest share in global larvicides market

In 2021, biocontrol agent segment dominated the market, accounting for YY% of global sales. Deadly diseases such as malaria, chikungunya, and dengue can be managed by biocontrol agents. The concerns about increasing dengue and malaria cases create an opportunity for the biocontrol agents. According to the WHO, 40% of the population living in underdeveloped countries is at risk of serious diseases, such as malaria, which is one of the life-threatening diseases caused by parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. The biocontrol methods are a long-term method and most importantly, a self-sustaining one that helps in the control of invasive species of plants. Biocontrol agents are also called biological control and are mainly used for the reduction of pest population and produce yields that are free of any pests. These factors are driving the market growth.

Geographical Penetration:

North America is the dominating region during the forecast period

North America is projected to be the dominating region due to the presence of many multinational companies in the region. In the United States, the Environment Protection Agency (US EPA) registered three major types of larval control agents, microbial larvicides, insect growth inhibitors, and chemical insecticides (mainly temephos. In United States and Mexico modern agriculture is an integral part of the society. In U.S. agriculture generally has become mechanized and heavily dependent upon an integrated system of supporting agribusinesses, although traditional practices continue in Mexico. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis is a naturally occurring soil bacterium that can effectively kill mosquito larvae present in water. Aquabac, Teknar, Baltimore, and Vectobac are some of the commercially available bacteria’s occurring in agricultural fields in Canada and Mexico. All these factors have propelled the demand for the market.

Competitive Landscape:

There are several established participants in the industry and local manufacturers; hence, the market is fragmented. Some major key players are Adama, BASF, Sumitomo chemicals, Certis, Summit Chemicals, Nufarm, Russell IPM, Eli Lily, Syngenta among others. Some of the major key players investing in expanding their business through service offerings and others. For instance, in May 2020, ADAMA Ltd acquired the remaining 51% stake in Alfa Agricultural Supplies SA (“Alfa”), a leading Greek provider of crop protection and other agriculture-related inputs. In July 2019, ADAMA US announced a new service offering for its customers. ADAMA Eagle Eye powered by Agremo offers an advanced analysis of aerial data and imagery that helps growers protect yields more efficiently through user-friendly maps, statistics, and other practical tools. In 2018, BASF's agrochemical division reported that due to the Guinea Worm Eradication Program, cases of Guinea Worm Disease came down to 28 from 3.5 million.

COVID-19 Impact:

Negative impact on the global larvicides market

The initial COVID-19 lockdown caused disruptions in the logistics system and affected the supply of larvicides across the globe. There had been restrictions and shutdown of insecticides companies across the globe in the initial phase, which in turn resulted in the shortage of feed for livestock farmers. Shutting down of supermarkets and shops due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions which has significantly impacted the product revenues. Sudden outbreak of COVID-19 led to the implementation of stringent lockdown regulations across several nations, resulting in disruptions in the import and export activities of larvicides. Local government departments and mosquito control districts lead large-scale mosquito control activities during an outbreak.
