Hemodialysis is a process of blood filtration for a person suffering from kidney failure. The process is carried out by connecting a dialysis machine to the patient with the help of a catheter as a linking point. The catheter has two types of lumens (flexible tubular passage) for the exchange of blood, which are colored red and blue to have clear identification while the dialysis process.

Hemodialysis Catheters Market Dynamics and Trends

The global hemodialysis catheter market growth is driven by several factors such as the rising number of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases, an increasing number of dialysis centers, and technological advancements in the catheters.

The number of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is rising by approx. 6% per year. Around 3.7 million patients were being treated for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) globally at the end of 2016.  Out of those 3.7 million patients, almost 3 million were undergoing dialysis treatment (either hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis), and around 750,000 were living with kidney transplants. Among the patients with end-stage renal disease, about 90% of patients require hemodialysis three times a week while 9% of the patients adopt home peritoneal dialysis. In 2015, End-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases were approx. 703,243 in the United States. For the treatment of this disease, most patients and their providers use an array of products produced by the hemodialysis equipment and supplies industry. In 2016, 329,000 patients in the EU received a Hemodialysis treatment, and are expected to reach 348000 by 2020. Taiwan shows the highest ESRD prevalence (3,490 per million population – pmp), followed by Japan (2,720 pmp) and the United States (2,180 pmp).

With a rising number of End-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases, there is a need for dialysis; hence the number of dialysis centers is also increasing. A predominant number of hemodialysis patients undergo treatment in dialysis centers. There are about 40,000 such centers worldwide, 61% of which are in private or corporate ownership. The remaining 31% lay in the public sector or belong to healthcare organizations. There are large geographical divergences, however: while 99% of the American (US) centers are private or corporate, only 44% are so in the European Union. Within the EU, last year 329,000 patients received a total of 49.8 million HD treatments across 5,410 centers. The United States, the EU, and Japan, together represent 40% of all dialysis patients, and 90% of the patients are above 65 years old. Dialysis alone costs around USD 17.06 billion per year to EU health systems.

However, there are several side effects associated with the treatment of hemodialyses such as itching, infections, anemia, pericarditis, hyperkalemia, hypotension, hypertension, muscle cramps, and bone diseases associated with hemodialysis treatment. Some of the other long-term risks involved in hemodialysis include inadequate filtering of wastes, the formation of clots in the dialysis graft or fistula, and the onset of cardiovascular disease or cardiac arrhythmias. The fear of such outcomes prevents people from undergoing hemodialysis treatment. About 10% to 30% of dialysis patients carry the hepatitis C virus. The high death rate of "emergency-only" hemodialysis, or EOHD than regular hemodialysis is a major drawback for the market.

Hemodialysis Catheters Market Segmentation

By product type, the hemodialysis catheter market is segmented into non-cuffed tunneled, cuffed tunneled, and non-tunneled. The tunneled catheters are generally used for treatment as they are inserted into the skin. Non-cuffed tunneled catheters are used for short-period treatment or in case of emergencies, whereas Cuffed- Tunnelled catheters are used for treatments with longer periods. Cuffed- Tunnelled catheters are preferred when the placed AV fistula or grafts are not ready to use and also when the patient’s blood vessels are not fit for a fistula or graft. Cuffed and tunneled type catheter is used for chronic hemodialysis, where blood access is required for more than three weeks. These catheters are generally used based on the patient’s condition. Chronic hemodialysis catheters are generally inserted in the chest or neck.

The shift from silicone catheters to polyurethane chronic catheters has shown improved performance. As polyurethane is stronger than silicone and offers thinner walls that allow for improved blood flow. Chronic hemodialysis catheters are generally of step-tip design or split-tip design. The step-tip catheter was designed to lower the recirculation of blood flow between the arterial and venous lumens, whereas a split-tip catheter was designed to decrease the catheter tip’s positional dependence. The chronic hemodialysis catheter market has shown positive growth.

By end-users, the market is segmented into hospitals & clinics, home Dialysis and In-center dialysis, and others. In-center dialysis accounted for the major share of dialysis catheter consumption in 2018 and is expected to dominate continuously over the forecast period to 2026. The availability of staff-assisted treatments, labs, and check-ups for patients is driving consumers to opt for in-center dialysis over home dialysis, thus driving the growth of the in-center dialysis segment. As of 2015, there are over 1700 hemodialysis centers including hospitals and treatment centers spread across 161 countries globally.

Hemodialysis Catheters Market Geographical Analysis

North America is dominating the global hemodialysis catheters market accounting for the largest market share in 2018, owing to increasing incidence of kidney diseases, rising number of diabetes and hypertension patients, and technological advancements in the healthcare industry. The United States has the largest market share about 85% of the global hemodialysis equipment market. The major players in North America include B. Braun Melsungen Ag, Baxter International Inc., and Fresenius Medical Care. The US is considered the world’s largest market for hemodialysis equipment as hemodialysis is the most widely accepted treatment method in the country.  According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, 64% of all prevalent ESRD cases in the US were receiving hemodialysis therapy as of 2013. Home hemodialysis treatment is rising in popularity because of healthcare reforms in the US that have led to higher healthcare costs. Hemodialysis service providers operating in the country are adopting strategies, such as product innovation and product line extension, to increase their market share. It is estimated that around 82% of patients in the United States initiated dialysis via a catheter.

Hemodialysis Catheters Companies and Competitive Landscape

The hemodialysis catheter market across the globe is highly competitive with the presence of both global and local vendors. The sustainability of small manufacturers is uncertain as their revenues are entirely dependent on the demand for catheters and healthcare reforms in the country.

Though many vendors enter the market to tap into the large customer base, only a few players that properly manage their sales, distribution, and working capital effectively survive and continue their operations.

Some of the major players include AngioDynamics, C.R. Bard, Fresenius Medical Care, Medical Components, Medtronic, Argon Medical Devices, Cook Medical, Foshan Special Medical, and Navilyst Medica, among others.

The key players are adopting various growth strategies such as product launches, mergers & acquisitions, partnerships, and collaborations which are contributing to the growth of the Hemodialysis Catheters market globally. For instance,

In February 2019, Fresenius Medical Care, the world's largest provider of dialysis products and services, acquired NxStage Medical, Inc., following approval by antitrust authorities in the United States.

In February 2019, BD, a leading global medical technology company, received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the BD WavelinQ™ 4 French (4F) endoAVF system, which allows for the creation of an AVF in either the ulnar artery and ulnar vein or the radial artery and radial vein, expanding upon the current indication for the system.

In July 2019, CVS Health started a clinical trial of up to 70 patients to evaluate the safety and performance of a home hemodialysis device the company intends to incorporate into its CVS Kidney Care initiative. The HemoCare Hemodialysis System, developed in partnership with the DEKA Research & Development Corp., aims to be part of the shift from the delivery of dialysis from clinics to the home setting.
