Pressure Relief Products are designed to relieve the constant pressure that is often applied constantly to parts of the skin of patients who aren't mobile. The pressure relief equipment moves the patient so the skin is not constantly compressed between the bone and the mattress or chair. This is extremely important as without it the tissue that is compressed gets depleted of oxygen and it can often develop sores or ulcers.

Pressure Relief Devices Market Dynamics and Trends

The global market for pressure relief devices is primarily driven by the rise in the geriatric population, increase in the prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and other cardiovascular disorders along with the rising awareness of the injury and attempts by healthcare providers to reduce its incidence.

Pressure injuries such as ulcers affect an estimated 2.5 million people annually in the U.S alone as per the AHRQ, causing an estimated 60,000 deaths due to associated complications. Patients with these injuries have a longer length of stay in hospitals, leading to significantly higher costs. Patients above the age of 65 represent the majority of patients hospitalized for pressure injuries due to their reduced skin thickness and lower mobility alongside other factors. As per the WHO data, the global population above 65 years of age numbered more than 900 million in 2017 and it is projected to increase to more than 2 billion by 2050. The cost of treatment that insurance providers and patients have to bear is also high with pressure injuries costing the NHS alone more than 3.8 million pounds per day.

Despite the incidence of hospital-induced pressure injuries reducing, the number remains high with an incidence rate of up to 23 percent with studies indicating that the majority of patients at risk still do not receive fully adequate protection. The market is also helped by the increase in awareness caused by industry campaigns such as the “On Your Marks” and “Stop the Pressure” campaigns.

The Global market for pressure relief devices is restrained by factors such as the development of negative pressure therapies, the high cost of treatment along with the high cost of dynamic surfaces. In 2008, the CMS classified hospital-acquired pressure injuries as avoidable and stopped reimbursing for them, leading to higher patient costs. Major insurance providers such as Athena followed similar policies and provided reimbursement for the more expensive dynamic surfaces only for high-level pressure. The higher cost of dynamic surfaces also forces hospitals to procure them on a rental basis leading to lower overall product sales.

Pressure Relief Devices Market Segmentation Analysis

Based on product the global market for XX is broadly segmented as – By Form, By Type, By End Users.

By Form, the global market for pressure relief devices is further segmented into mattresses, overlays, cushions, and seating. The global market for pressure relief devices is dominated by mattresses. This is due to the typical restriction of mobility of patients to their beds in medical facilities and their relative cost-effectiveness over overlays.

By Type, the global market for pressure relief devices is segmented into static, dynamic, and hybrid segments. The global market for pain relief devices is dominated by foam-based static devices due to their significantly lower cost as compared to dynamic devices along with ease of use despite them providing potentially lower comfort. Along with these factors, the usage of high-tech pressure relief devices is restricted by insurance providers to higher levels of pressure injuries leading to possibly lower market share. The static devices are segmented as foam, gel-filled, fiber-filled, air-filled and other types of devices while the dynamic devices are segmented as alternating pressure, low-air-loss, and kinetic bed type devices.

By end-users, the global market for pressure relief devices is segmented into acute care, long-term acute care, nursing homes, and home care. The global market for pain relief devices is dominated mostly by acute care and nursing care facilities due to a large number of patients being either geriatric or having motion restrictions.

Pressure Relief Devices Market Geographical Share

The global pressure relief devices market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, South America, and Middle-East and Africa.

North America dominates the market share for pressure relief devices globally by revenue. This is attributed to a large geriatric population, an increasingly obese population along with excellent palliative care facilities.

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to be the fastest-growing market during the forecast period due to a rising geriatric population and care facilities along with an overall increase in healthcare infrastructure.

Pressure Relief Devices Companies and Competitive Trends

The global market for pressure relief devices is highly fragmented. Due to the simplicity of manufacturing the devices for low-level pressure ulcers, the market is flooded with competitors, particularly in the emerging markets. Devices for treating high-level ulcers require more R&D to provide better comfort and due to this, they face a less competitive environment.

Key players in the market are launching new products and collaborating with other companies to expand their markets. For instance, Frontier medical group partnered with Joerns healthcare to distribute its pressure injury prevention products in Canada.

Apex medical corp., Stryker corp., LINET group SE, Joerns Healthcare, Hill-Rom, ArjoHuntleigh, Sizewise corporation, Stiegelmeyer group, Paramount Bed Holdings Co. Ltd., Medline Industries Inc., Talley group

Major news

In November 2018, LINET launched its Virtuoso anti-decubitus mattress. The mattress incorporates 3-cell technology that works on a zero-pressure principle where the part of the body is completely free of pressure.

In May 2017, Hill-Rom launched its new Envella™ Air Fluidized Therapy Bed, for the prevention and treatment of pressure injuries. From increased bead depth, adjustable airflow, and sensing technologies, to advanced weight-based pressure distribution and an integrated scale, the Envella™ bed is designed to make air-fluidized therapy (AFT) more comfortable and safer for patients.

In Feb 2017, Frontier Medical Group announced a major new distribution contract with Joerns Healthcare in Canada. Under the new deal, Frontier will distribute its Repose® range of Pressure Injury Prevention products through Joerns Healthcare in Canada. The agreement is significant as it marks Frontier’s first step into the North American market after its experience in the European markets.
