Economic benefits offered by 3D concrete printing is expected to significantly boost the market growth

The construction activities have grown during recent times on a global scale, with rapid urbanization and industrialization efforts driving the economic development of developed and developing countries alike. As such, the issues faced with the disposal of waste and delays in timely completion of buildings have hampered the growth of the construction sector.

The adoption and integration of computer-aided precise 3D printing technologies are aimed at optimizing the construction costs, reduce construction time, enhance flexibility in building design and shift focus towards the use of eco-friendly building techniques. For instance, the cost for 1 square meter of wall using traditional construction methods is approximately $75, whereas with the Apis Cor house 3D printer it is only $27.

According to 3D Natives Magazine published in January 2018, 3D printing in construction is economical in terms of material usage when compared with the traditional manufacturing process. Moreover, 3D printing reduces the labor costs by 50%-80%, production time by 50%-70%, and construction waste by 30%-60%. Therefore, the economic benefits offered by 3D concrete printing is expected to significantly boost the market growth. In addition, the growing demand for complex building structures and the elimination of chemical waste would also propel market growth, coupled with a rise in funding and investments for innovative building techniques.  For instance, in April 2018, tech startup Icon announced that it is raising money to 3D-print durable and affordable single-story concrete homes in El Salvador, which would cost around 4,000 USD each, to offset the global housing crisis.

Market Opportunities

Increasing flexibility in 3D printing operations using advanced software

Increasing flexibility in 3D printing operations using advanced software is a major opportunity shaping the growth of the 3D concrete printing market. In November 2019, AMFG, a UK-based provider of MES software, announced the strategic partnership with EOS to enable machine connectivity and end-to-end workflow automation for additive manufacturing. The companies together plan to offer customers the management of their entire additive manufacturing operations with AFMG's Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and direct connectivity to machines with the software platform. EOS is a technology supplier in the field of industrial 3D printing of polymers and metals. 3D printed construction technologies could also be used by humanity to explore space. NASA launched the 3D Printed Habitat Challenge for examining technologies possible for building homes in space, such as on the Moon or on Mars. Although ambitious, it is too early to tell if 3D printing is a suitable solution for this purpose but possibly it is.

Competitive Scenario

The 3D concrete printing market is at a relatively nascent stage, and as such contains huge growth potential during the forecast period. The key market players include LafargeHolcim Ltd, Sika AG, Heidelbergcement AG, CyBe Construction B.V., and XtreeE SAS France.

The companies are thus focused on innovative product launches and strategic partnerships to strengthen its market position. For instance, in February 2018, Apis Cor completed an on-site house using 3D printing technology in Moscow, Russia, in collaboration with PIK.

In November 2017, LafargeHolcim Ltd announced that it would participate in the University of Nantes’ 3D printed social housing project Yhnova, to build a 95m2 house, in an attempt to digitally transform the affordable social housing sector. The market players are growing their footprints across different geographies and entering new untapped marketplaces in emerging countries to widen their customer base and strengthen their geographic presence. Several construction companies are actively experimenting with a variety of 3D printing techniques and more will do so over the forecast period. The Chinese company WinSun constructed 10 houses using 3D concrete printing in under 24 hours recently. The Dutch company Universe Architecture has designed the world’s largest 3D printer that uses sand as a binder for creating a stone-like material.

Over the forecast period, many more companies will utilize 3D concrete printing technologies in a variety of construction activities. The market does not have many companies at present and thus products are limited in variety as well. Hence it faces the issue of lack of standardization. However, as more companies venture in the 3D concrete printing arena, products will become more standardized, sophisticated, and even more cost competitive.
