Growing demand of energy efficient systems for commercial buildings

Residential and commercial buildings represent about 35% of the energy consumption in the US and around 41% in Europe, with heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems consuming almost one-third to one-half of the total building energy consumption. Due to the trend of energy consumption, Variable air volume (VAV) systems have been extensively used for present HVAC systems and have become one of the main systems in commercial buildings since being introduced to the US market in the 1970s all around the world due to having various advantages over other HVAC systems, such as less fan capacity, more flexibility with respect to different loads, and better indoor environment etc.

These are the most modern, energy-efficient all air systems available for large building air conditioning. VAV systems need less fan capacity than a similar constant volume system. Generally, a VAV system fan volume is 60 percent of a CAV system. It has various energy-efficient related features such as fan energy savings from long hour usage at decreased volumes, also installed fan horsepower reductions,  Reduced system energy consumption cost, Integrated high-efficiency sound attenuator, precise air volume control with center averaging multi-point airflow differential cross velocity pressure sensor. According to research studies, VAV systems have 17%–38% energy savings potential compared to the CAV (constant air volume) system. Also, it has about 5%–10% energy savings potential when compared to the FCU (fan coil unit) system.

Growing investment and increasing awareness of green buildings and energy-efficient systems are also increasing the business of the variable air volume market.

For example, spending on energy-efficient buildings increased in 2019 for the first time compared to the previous years, with investment in building energy efficiency throughout the global markets increasing to USD 152 billion in 2019, an annual growth rate of 3% from 2018. Still, a small proportion of the USD 5.8 trillion is spent in the building and construction sector, which shows the huge business potential for the VAV market.

Finance institutions and property enterprises are recognizing the growth potential and investment opportunities available with sustainable building investment.

For instance, of the 1,005 real estate enterprises, developers, REITS, and funds representing over  USD 4.1 trillion in assets under management that organized under The Global ESG Benchmark for Real Assets (GRESB) in 2019, almost 90% align their projects with green building rating standards for construction and operations to attract potential customers. International Finance Corporation (IFC) estimates that green buildings represent one of the largest investment opportunities of the forecast period to be around USD 24.7 trillion by 2030.

Growing application of technologies

Many variable air volume companies are applying automation to their service processes and sales to reduce costs and keep prices competitive. As a result, customers can expect smart technology solutions to continue revolutionizing the industry in the future. Local contractors and distributors are increasingly using software and online tools like search engine optimization (SEO) and widgets to connect with customers.  Due to the adoption of new technologies, customers are expecting to switch to mobile technologies to access HVAC services, for instance, setting up preventive maintenance and subscribing to service programs. Improved ventilation systems like variable air volume (VAV) systems will integrate new technologies that deliver better energy efficiency.  Experts estimate future system advancements will improve not only energy efficiency but also indoor air quality. These include the amalgamation of filters with higher MERV values for use in heavily polluted areas and sensor-driven electronically commutated motors (ECM), which will measure air quality and the ventilation demands of a building into account in real-time.
