The advantages of safety and reusability of container liners

Shipping certain materials only by containers can sometimes be ineffective. Applying container liners helps make shipping these materials much easier, saving time and cost-effective procedure. These liners are mainly suited for shipping minerals, powders, seeds, and food. One of the main advantages of container liners is they are a very cost-efficient tool to use that helps in preventing cross-contamination. If the container liners are not used, shipping companies must have to clean out the inside of the container between each transport or use one container for only one type of material as powder and food materials may contaminate the surface of containers.  Other than that risk of cross-contamination also lessens by using container liners. For instance, If a company is transporting a chemical powder on one trip and then a food item on the next, they can’t risk the food getting contaminated. Using polypropylene or polyethylene container liners prevents these problems and can be changed frequently unless big containers. Container liners are simple to install and can be reused multiple times. If a company ships the same material frequently, they can label the liners for the type of materials that they contain. And unlike the dead weight of containers, when container liners are not in use, they are lightweight and can be folded up to be stored more or less anywhere.

Container liners also reduce packaging waste which is obvious in other packing methods for bulk amounts of cargo.

Other than that, without using container liners, the shipping companies would have to package the goods into smaller containers to keep them from spilling out and ensure they stay safe. With a container liner, this procedure can be skipped by packing the goods directly into the container, which is more cost-effective.

The normal life of a container liner is normally five-eight years and some of them are reusable. There is increasing adoption of container liner reuse as they are economical, easy to carry without taking much space while they are empty, and require less maintenance.

Additionally, container liners used in bulk material transportation are flexible packaging materials and can be reused in a closed-loop system. A closed-loop system is a method in which container liners are cleaned and reused for the same application for which a container liner was first designed. In a closed-loop system, container liner manufacturers, customers, and end-users all help reuse the container liner to save money indirectly by using the container liner multiple times.

Increasing manufacturing output in North America is rising the demand for the container liner used for transportation and storage solutions of the products, mainly foods and grains. As a result, container liner is gaining popularity, particularly for container shipping purposes and the simplicity of loading and unloading provided by them.

The use of container liners enables bulk cargo to be shipped easily with minimized handling requirements. The liners are mainly made from polyethylene and enable safe transportation of agricultural foods and high-level chemicals within an enclosed chamber without any cargo contamination from pollutants and salt air.

Growing trade activities in North America

The consumption of container liner volume is related to downstream industries that produce various products for consumers and the global economy. As there is always some uncertainty in the global economy, the container liner industry's growth rate may not be stable. Still, it has the minimum necessity worldwide as countries are increasingly dependent on international trade for various products, which is driving the market growth of North America container liner as it is one of the busiest trade markets in the world.

For instance, Canada, with a relatively small population but with huge resources and a high degree of productivity, has low domestic consumption and depends on foreign trade for profitability more than any other developed country on this continent.

On the other hand, the U.S., with a vast internal market and the highest per capita consumption of goods globally, depends mainly on domestic trade, although external trade has risen considerably and now accounts for approximately one-fourth of its total trade.

Mexico, by contrast, still has large areas where people live in a rural setup and produce little more than goods sufficient for local trade. But in recent years, the production of certain metals, chemicals, and tropical crops has extended rapidly for sale in foreign markets. Overall growth in trading, both domestic and international markets, has also bolstered container liners' demand in this region.

According to UNCTAD, international maritime trade to grow at an average annual growth rate of 3.5% over the 2019–2024 time period, driven mainly by growth in containerized, dry bulk, and gas cargoes. Still, uncertainty remains in the present maritime transport environment, with risks in favor of the downside due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Other than that, UNCTAD, in its report of the review of maritime transport 2019, has mentioned that the U.S. annual percentage change of volume of export was 4.2% and the volume of imports was 5.3%, which shows the growth of trade activity in this region.

According to Cushman & Wakefield's report, intermodal traffic in the U.S. increased up to 5.5% in 2018, a fifth annual record in the previous six years with high volumes during the year. This volume comprises both international and domestic freight.

Additionally, total inbound TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) volumes to leading North American container ports were up about 6.0% from 2017 and outbound loaded volumes were up about 2.0%. This also shows the growth rate of container liners as they are required for secure packaging.

Container liners are mainly suited for transportation of minerals, powders, seeds, and food and Canada trades raw or semi-processed materials—including pulp, paper, lumber, iron ore, nickel, lead and zinc, and uranium—along with red meat to Britain, the United States, and Japan and wheat sent to the United States, Indonesia, Iraq, and Japan. To protect many of these products, container liners are used extensively in this country.

U.S. trade has a global distribution and impact; of its export total, approximately one-third goes to western Europe, about another one-third goes to Mexico and Canada by inter-regional trade and over one-fifth goes to Japan, Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
