Shifting trends towards automation Drives the market growth of the green mining market.

Automation is one of the most significant ongoing trends in the mining sector. The drivers for this trend are not essentially environmental but also health, productivity, and safety.

Automated site monitoring potentially benefits environmental performance by assuring that issues are caught before they become significant or before they occur at all. Potential issues include emissions levels from mining and beneficiation and the weakening of separation barriers for tailings areas.

Due to the various advantages, various leading companies have shifted to automated operations in their mine. For instance, in 2020- Rio Tinto and Heliogen have formed an agreement to explore the deployment of solar technology at Rio Tinto’s borates mine in California. Under the MOU, Heliogen will deploy its artificial intelligence-powered technology at the Boron operation, where it will generate and store carbon-free energy to power the mine’s industrial processes.

Autonomous trucks rely on global positioning systems and sensor systems embedded in the mine structure to help navigate. The trucks can operate continuously, offering a longer lifespan, reduced fuel use and fewer maintenance costs.

For example, in 2018- Vale S.A has announced its first mine operating only with autonomous trucks in Brazil. The company estimates that vehicle lifespan will improve by 15% and maintenance costs and fuel consumption will decrease by 10%. The step will lower CO2 and particulate emissions in the mine.

Shifting to renewables is main opportunity for the green mining market

Mining companies are targeting green investments by promoting their production of materials that go into power lines, wind turbines and batteries.

Renewable energy is increasingly a viable alternative for off-grid sites, especially through hybrid diesel-renewable energy systems. Diesel systems combined with solar or wind will reduce the harmful emissions trucking cost in diesel fuel to remote locations. Renewable/diesel hybrid systems have already been deployed in different contexts, including Canada and Australia.

For example, Canadian company Barrick Gold’s Zaldivar copper mine in Chile relies entirely on renewable electricity generated by wind, hydro and solar sources. The company has committed to reduce its carbon emissions by 10% by the year 2030.

Moreover, the International Energy Agency reported that while coal mining will decline dramatically in the coming years, “the mining of minerals required for clean energy transitions will increase rapidly” in a global economy focused on reducing carbon emissions.
