Europe is expected to hold a market revenue share of 29% in the year 2020, growing with a CAGR of 9.63% during the forecast period.

Europe is one the largest markets for edible straws in the world, led by countries, like the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

Edible straws market in the United Kingdom is likely to reach USD YY million in 2029, from its recorded value of USD 18.50 million in 2020, growing with a CAGR of 10.62% during the forecast period.

England has banned the supply of plastic straws and stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds. The ban was originally intended to come into effect from April 2020. However, the move faced some delays and did not begin in England until 1 October 2020. Customers are no longer able to buy these products in shops in England, thus driving the market growth for alternatives such as edible straws.

Marriott began rolling out a no-plastic policy at its UK hotels in February 2018. More than 60 hotels in the United Kingdom have already eliminated plastic straws and are now offering consumers alternate straws upon request, including Le Meridien Piccadilly, Grosvenor House, and the W in Leicester Square.

In May 2017, Herald Plastics finalized terms to position itself as the UK’s sole supplier of edible straws. The quality disposables manufacturer and supplier launched the exclusive straws to the UK market. It will launch the straws for the UK’s entertainment and leisure sectors, targeting bars, festivals, events, clubs and restaurants.

In August 2018, Herald Plastic developed a customized version of its existing edible straw. The newly created version can be printed on down one side to enable businesses to brand images supporting their own marketing strategies.

The German edible straws market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 9.59% during the forecast period. The market value is likely to reach USD 22.04 million in 2028, from its recorded value of USD 10.76 million in 2020. In Germany alone, around 40 billion plastic straws are consumed every year – a number to which the catering sector makes a major contribution. This is expected to have a negative impact on the environment and thus Germany planned to ban the sale of single-use plastic straws, cutlery, cotton buds and food containers from July 2021.

Hence, key players in the market are launching edible straws that are biodegradable and do not have a negative impact on the environment. For instance, Wise Food is one of the key players in the Germany edible straws market. The start-up company wants to help with edible straws made from apple pomace, the solid waste left over in the production of apple juice.

In Germany, Wise Food creates 60,000 tonnes of edible straws. In May 2018, the company sold 50,000 straws, although the price is significantly higher than that of a plastic straw.

On the other hand, France contributed a market revenue share of 13% in the year 2020. Disposable plastic plates, cups, straws and other products were banned in France as of January 2020.

In April 2018, Pernod Ricard (a beverage company in France) collaborated with edible plastics company Loliware to produce edible straws. Pernod Ricard and Diageo both announced they would be bringing an end to the use of plastic straws and stirrers, banning them within all parts of their operations worldwide while encouraging their affiliates to do the same.

Italy edible straws market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 8.24% during the forecast period. The market value is likely to reach USD 7.18 million in 2028, from its recorded value of USD 3.76 million in 2020. The European Union has taken a big step forward banning all disposable plastic objects since 2021 and Italy has immediately proposed many ideas to replace disposable products with natural, reusable and eco-friendly products.

Cooperative Campo di Fossombrone, in Marche, operates in the organic farming sector and mainly sells pasta. Hence the idea for a new edible straw, 100% biodegradable, produced with organic, gluten-free and non-GMO pasta. The Italian eating straw is made of rice and corn, gluten free and therefore also suitable for coeliacs. It is also GMO-free and completely biodegradable. Moreover, bars in Italy are using pasta as straws to reduce plastic use.

Spain held a market revenue share of 5% in the year 2020. Sorbos is one of the key players in Spain's edible straws market. SORBOS is the first eco-friendly and 100% biodegradable edible straw.

Ireland, Poland, and Switzerland are some of the other companies in Europe whose market value is likely to reach USD XX million in 2028, from its recorded value of USD 18.21 million in 2020. Various restaurants in these countries have started banning the use of plastic straws. For instance,McDonald’s is banning plastic straws in international locations such as the U.K. and Ireland.

In Ireland, three running friends launched Eco Straws, a company focused on biodegradable and edible drinking straws and cutlery. The company produces edible straws in a variety of flavors like chocolate, strawberry, and lemon, as well as pasta-based straws, wheat-based straws, bamboo-based straws, PLA straws made from sugarcane or corn starch, and more.
