Peritoneal Dialysis Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.0% during the forecasting period 2021-2028.

Syndicated report on "Global Peritoneal Dialysis Market– Size, Share and Forecast (2021-2028)" has been added to DataM Intelligence’s product offering.

2021-07-22

The global peritoneal dialysis market size was worth USD 3,978.9 million in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD XX million by 2028, at a CAGR of 6.0% during the forecast period (2021-2028).

Peritoneal dialysis is a treatment for kidney failure that uses the lining of the patient’s abdomen, or belly, to filter the blood inside his/her body. The rising prevalence of end stage renal disease and surge in demand for home dialysis treatment are anticipated to drive the peritoneal dialysis (PD) equipment segment. The flexibility that Peritoneal Dialysis (PD) offers renal patients allows them to maintain their lifestyle and independence. When automated PD is combined with remote patient management, the flexibility is further enhanced and is associated with the potential to improve clinical outcomes and adherence. Remote patient management wherein patients’ clinical data is digitally collected and transmitted to his or her hospital or clinic for monitoring and analysis has been shown to have trends indicating fewer hospitalizations, provide improved access to care and lower utilization of healthcare resources.

Market Dynamics

Drivers

  • Growing prevalence of ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease)
  • Rising incidence of diabetes and hypertension
  • Benefits of peritoneal dialysis over hemodialysis
  • Increasing demand for the technologically advanced treatment procedure

Restraints

  • High failure rates of peritoneal dialysis
  • Risk of infection associated with peritoneal dialysis
  • Discomfort due to permanent catheter placement outside the body delivery

Growing prevalence of ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease)

Globally, there has been an increasing incidence of ESRD, in both the developed and developing countries. Peritoneal dialysis is thus referred to patients with end-stage renal disorder (ESRD) or chronic kidney diseases. According to a 2018 study conducted by the University of California San Francisco, an estimated 2 million people in the world suffered from end-stage renal disorders (ESRD).

The incidence of kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplantation for end stage renal disease (ESRD) in the U.S. ranks among the highest in the world. In 2017, there were 124,500 new cases of registered ESRD, compared to 125,408 the prior year. The rate of new cases of ESRD at 340.7 per million in 2017.

This represents a 2.6% increase since 2016, which is the result of decreasing death rates in the ESRD population. Compared to Caucasians, ESRD prevalence is about 3.7 times greater in African Americans, 1.4 times greater in Native Americans, and 1.5 times greater in Asian Americans.

The total Medicare spending on ESRD patients was in excess of $120 billion in 2017. Spending for ESRD patients totaled $35.9 billion, accounting for 7.2% of the overall Medicare-paid claims in the fee-for-service system, a share that has remained relatively constant for a decade.

Geographical Analysis

The North America peritoneal dialysis market was valued USD 1,348.3 million in 2020 and is estimated to reach USD XX million by 2028, at a CAGR of 6.3% during the forecast period (2021-2028). The North America segment is estimated to account for a share of approximately 33.89% of the peritoneal dialysis market by 2020 and is anticipated to grow to 34.7% by 2028.

North America is expected to continue its dominance in the global peritoneal dialysis market during the forecast period owing to the presence of large number of patients suffering from chronic kidney diseases in the U.S. and Canada, shortage of kidney donors, high consumer awareness, well-established healthcare infrastructures, and advancements in medical technologies.

Kidney failure affects almost 750,000 people per year in the United States. The disease disproportionately affects the nation’s minority and low-income patients. African Americans are 3.5 times more likely to have kidney failure.

Peritoneal dialysis (PD)is a very effective dialysis modality and maintains better 3-year survival, while being approximately $14,000 per patient per year cheaper than ICHD. Consequently, under these value-based pay for performance models, PD in the U.S. has increased significantly since 2011.

In July 10, 2019, President Donald Trump issued an Executive Order, referred to as the Advancing American Kidney Health Initiative, which, among many things, outlined the goal to have 80% of new kidney patients either receive peritoneal dialysis or a kidney transplant by 2025.

Some of the market players involved in the United States market include DaVita, Baxter International, Medtronic, U.S. Renal Care and among others. These players adopted various strategies such as collaborations, mergers, acquisitions and product innovation to maintain their market position. For instance, in March 2017, the United States Renal Care announced expansion of its dialysis clinic in Dallas. This expansion allowed the company to broaden its business operations and increase customer base.
