Increasing the demand for bio/natural vanillin globally

Rising consumer awareness about the adverse effects of artificial food ingredients is increasing the demand for bio/natural vanillin globally. Vanillin is an essential aromatic compound extensively used to enhance the aroma and flavor of the different end products. The extensive use of natural vanillin as a flavoring agent, in numerous applications, such as food, beverages, and pharmaceuticals, is expected to boost the market demand, during the forecast period. It is also used as a premium component in personal care, perfumes, and medicines. It is widely used as a flavoring agent in food products and as an aromatic additive for incense, perfumes, medicines, candles, and air fresheners. For instance, the annual revenue of smells in the US alone is approximately USD 4 billion. Preferences to natural Vanillin are increasing and expanding rapidly in order to substitute synthetic materials with renewable options. Thus, high and increasing demand for perfumes and fragrances is boosting the global vanillin market growth. Natural vanillin is extracted from the seed pods of Vanilla planifolia, a vining orchid native to Mexico, but now grown in tropical areas around the globe. Madagascar is presently the largest producer of natural vanillin. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have created food safety and quality standards by which an ingredient is considered natural. Biotechnology-based vanillin is defined as ‘natural flavoring’ by the European Parliament and the council under 1334/2008. Growth in the end-user industries such as food and beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and others, is one of the major factors that is driving the global vanillin market growth.  Companies are also focusing on introducing natural vanillin due to the huge demand from the public for health consciousness. Belgium company Solvay SA has introduced its natural and functional vanilla ingredients, due to growing consumer’s demand for clean labeling and health consciousness.  Solvay’s natural Vanifolia™ range is a functional vanilla ingredient, which acts as a replacement of vanilla beans that will help enhance flavor and taste. Adding to this, In January 2018, Solvay S.A. increased production capacity of natural vanillin by 60 metric tons at its plant-based in Saint-Fons (France). The increased capacity will help Solvay to meet increasing customer demand for natural and clean label vanillin products. Furthermore, In 2017, Solvay S.A. launched its new natural vanillin product Rhovanil Natural CW. The product is derived from non-GMO rice and is a substitute to synthetic vanillin. This helped Solvay to expand its product portfolio. The high price of bio vanillin, coupled with a supply deficit, is expected to restrict the market over the years to come. Production of natural vanillin is a labor-intensive process, and as a result, it is not widely grown across all regions. However, the Natural vanillin market is on the rise, as it is an improved and efficient alternative to synthetic vanilla, which is expected to create potential opportunities for the years to come.
