According to the World Health Organization (WHO), chronic disease prevalence is expected to rise by 57% by 2020. Chronic diseases accounted for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide in the year 2018, and out of which 71% of deaths were due to ischemic heart disease, 75% were due to stroke, and 70% of deaths were due to diabetes in developing countries. According to the World Health Organization, about 132,000 melanoma skin cancers occur each year worldwide. Also, according to the American Academy of Dermatology( 2017 report), one in three Americans were suspected to suffer from some dermatological condition in 2017. The rising prevalence of skin diseases can be attributed to the increasing exposure to X-rays, ultraviolet rays, and infrared waves. Further, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported that about 900 million people in the world are affected by skin diseases, necessitating the use for such products. Thus, the rising chronic diseases is increasing the demand for skin substitutes during the forecast period.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the incidence of diabetes for all age-groups worldwide was estimated to be 2.8% in 2000 and 4.4% by 2030. The total number of people with diabetes is anticipated to rise from 171 million in 2000 to 366 million by 2030. Also, according to the International diabetes Federation (IDF), in 2017, approx. 425 million adults (20-79 years) were living with diabetes and estimated to rise to 629 million by 2045. The proportion of people with type-2 diabetes is increasing in most countries 79% of adults with diabetes were living in low- and middle-income countries. The highest numbers of people with diabetes were between 40 and 59 years of age. Thus, as a consequence, the prevalence of diabetes related complications are expected to increase over the forecast period (2019-2026), leading to rise in demand for skin substitutes products.

Countries such as Africa and Brazil have a high number of burn cases. For instance, according to WHO, around 180,000 deaths are caused due to burns in low- and middle-income countries annually. Children suffering from burns become disabled due to the severity of the condition and improper medical care in countries such as Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Colombia. To treat burn wounds, skin replacement and substitute products are of great help. Each year in the United State alone, there are 70,000 burn injuries and 600,000–1,500,000 venous leg ulcers injuries. The treatment of wounds costs nearly $20 billion annually. According to American burn association in 2016, over 60% of the estimated US acute hospitalizations related to burns were admitted to 128 burn centers. Skin substitutes is one of the widely preferred treatments in case of burns as it enables fast recovery with minimum or no complications. Therefore, availability of superior quality synthetic substitutes and it’s growing demand in treatment of burns has proven beneficial for the industry growth.

The advancement in technologies in skin substitute products is expected to drive the market growth during the forecast period. 3D bioprinting, a transformative technology for the reconstruction of burn wounds is the recent approach which enables accurate placement of cell types and allows precise and reproducible fabrication of constructs which replaces the injured or damaged sites. Thus, its use for wound reconstruction will lead to a paradigm shift in patient outcomes. Low-cost skin substitutes, and biological growth factors that aid in effective wound healing have also been introduced to the market. This has increased new product launches in developed countries that will certainly lead to an increase in the penetration of existing products in the markets in developing countries. In January 2019, AVITA Medical Limited announced the launch of the RECELL autologous cell harvesting device (RECELL System) in the U.S. market for the treatment of acute thermal burns in patients aged 18 years and older. In October 2018, Osiris launched Grafix PL PRIME, which can be stored at room temperature. Stravix is a cryopreserved placental tissue designed for use as a cover or wrap to support soft tissue repair in a range of surgical applications.
