Europe Targeted Temperature management

The rising number of surgical procedures is another major factor for the growth of the temperature management market.

Europe owing to the rise in surgeries, and growing cases of hypothermia among the infant and geriatric population, has attracted several companies across the major countries of the European Union, which should boost the growth of the existing market. The rising number of surgical procedures is another major factor for the growth of the temperature management market. According to Eurostat 2017, a high number of surgeries were performed in European countries, including cataract surgery and colonoscopy.  Similarly, Other European countries such as Spain, Italy, Netherlands, etc. have also witnessed a rise in the number of surgeries performed. These surgeries have mostly been related to chronic diseases in the adult patients and geriatric patients. In addition, an increasing number of healthcare centers, hospitals, ambulatory care units, emergency care centers and critical care centers will show significant adaptation of hypothermia management systems and accessories over the next few years.  According to the European Journal of Cancer, There were an estimated 3.9 million new cases of cancer and 1.9 million deaths from cancer in Europe in 2018. The most common cancer sites were cancers of the female breast, followed by colorectal, lung and prostate cancer.

Furthermore, exposure of body cells to higher temperature makes the cells more likely to be affected by chemotherapy and other cancer therapies. However, over heating pose high risk of damage to associated tissues. This has increased the need for precision temperature management which is driving the growth of the market in the forecast period. Also, the number of hip implant surgeries, major peritoneal surgeries, thoracic surgeries, and ENT surgeries along with the surgeries for central nervous system (CNS), in Europe were around 35,860 thousand procedures in 2016 and is projected to reach 41,818 thousand procedures by 2023.  This raises the demand for temperature management devices usage in hospital rooms, intensive care units (ICUs), and other areas. Intravascular temperature management is gaining popularity as an effective means of inducing and maintaining temperature during surgeries. Thus, the increasing number of surgical procedures is driving the market. However, the high risk of organ dysfunctions during rewarming phases and the high risk of cooling below target temperature using conventional cooling systems is posing negative impact on utilization of TTM.Also, the development of next-generation surface cooling systems is likely to reduce these negative impacts among patients in the region.

United Kingdom

The potential need for temperature management in cardiac and neurologic disorders is motivating the medical device manufacturers towards development of novel technologies that offer precise management of body temperature with simple and safe operation procedure is driving the market growth in the country. Technological advancements is another key factor for the growth of the TTM market in the UK. The introduction of new temperature management systems, such as surface pads, blankets, and head caps is increasing the adoption of TTM technologies in surgical centres and ICUs, thus propelling the market growth. For instance, In January 2017, Stryker launched Altrix, a next-generation precision temperature management system that can be used for patient warming and cooling purposes in all clinical settings. The product is available for sale in UK and Ireland markets

TTM is highly recommended after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and is shown to improve survival and neurological outcome. As per the guidelines of The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR), core body temperature should be maintained at 33 to 36 degree Celsius in OHCA patients for atleast 24 hours. According to the factsheet of British Heart Foundation (BHA) - 2019, the incidence of OHCA in the UK is more than 30,000 every year and the overall survival rate in the country is 10%. In UK including University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, Basildon University Hospital in Essex, and Royal Victoria in Belfast are conA group of 9 hospitals ducting a trail on 1,900 patients to understand the efficiency of TTM in OHCA. Beside the potential benefits of precise temperature management in a broad spectrum of medical conditions, TTM is not effective and even poses adverse outcomes in some of the clinical care conditions.

For instance, the intervention of TTM is not effective in conditions such as in-hospital cardiac arrest and non-shockable rythms. This factor will hamper its market in the U.K. The statistics of Office for National Statistics states that Ischemic heart diseases is the second leading cause of death, accounting for 10.9% of total deaths registered in England and Wales. The efforts laid by the British Heart Foundation, National Health Service (NHS), and some other organizations for improving the OHCA survival rate in the country is posing significant growth opportunities for the TTM market in the country. The current survival rate from OHCA is less than 10% in the U.K which is significantly lower than other European countries such as Norway (25%) and Netherlands (21%). Researchers at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff in coordination with 8 other hospitals in the UK are performing a trial called TTM2 on 1,900 cardiac arrest patients to evaluate the efficacy of maintaining hypothermia. The growth of the market is majorly attributable to the increasing number of cardiac arrest cases in the country.
