Europe is one of the largest exporters of cellulose ethers. This region held 30% of market share in the year 2019. The market for Europe cellulose ethers is expected to witness a CAGR of 4.14% to grow from 1,272.20 million in 2019 to XX million in 2027.

In 2018, Germany was top exporters of cellulose ethers, in primary forms. Germany held a share of 28.7% of imports value. In 2018, the import share of European countries was 6.9% for Belgium, 5.43% for Germany, 3.68% in France, 2.69% for Italy, 2.76% for United Kingdom and 2.15% for Spain among others. In 2018, Germany ($659M) had a larger trade value in exports than in imports of cellulose ethers, in primary forms.

In addition, Germany is Europe's largest beverage industry, which represents the fourth largest industry sector in Germany and due to the high demand of beverages such as energy drinks, mocktails, etc, the demand of cellulose ethers is growing faster.

Some of the key players such as Shandong Head and ShinEtsu have cellulose ether production plants in Germany. SE Tylose is based in Wiesbaden, Germany, producing approximately 65,000 tons of cellulose ether annually and is one of the world's most important cellulose ether suppliers.

In December 2018, Dow increased capacity in methyl cellulose production at its manufacturing facilities in Bomlitz and Bitterfeld, Germany, supporting customer requirements for high quality cellulose ether products.

Collectively, these expansion projects represented a 19,000 metric ton increase in capacity for Dow’s WALOCEL and METHOCEL cellulose ethers, which are used in a variety of applications for tile adhesives, grouts, fillers, levellers and joint compounds; reinforcing and bonding mortars for external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS); gypsum plasters; and cement-based renders.

Moreover, almost 45 million metric tons of dairy products are annually consumed in the European Union, which has over 300 registered kinds of cheese and dairy products. In the United Kingdom, dairy product manufacturers produced a turnover of almost 8.2 Million British pounds in 2016.

Most of the Netherland’s turnover within the food manufacturing sector is generated by dairy processing. The amount was roughly 12.2 Million euros in 2016. In the previous year, the turnover of the Swedish dairy industry amounted to approximately 2.6 Million Swedish kronor.

Hence, with increase in demand for dairy product, there is an increase in demand for cellulose ethers as they can be used as gelling agents in mixing food (such as methyl cellulose or hydroxypropyl cellulose in ice cream), thickeners in pie fillings and seasonings and as suspending agents in fruit juice and dairy products.

Moreover, Europe is a major hub for the personal care and cosmetics industry. The industry is dominated by leading beauty care brands.  Over the centuries, France became the hub of beauty products and also became one of the French economy’s revenue generators. Most of the cosmetic companies involved are SMEs and have large distribution markets all over the world.

France is the world’s largest exporter of cosmetic products; the country accounts for almost half of the European exports in this industry. With net sales of the entire industry reaching 45 Million euros in 2017, including 2.9 Million achieved by raw material suppliers, 24 Million by finished product manufacturers and 5 Million by retailers, completed by 14 Million for exports, France dominates the global cosmetics market with a 23% share.

With the growing cosmetic industry in France, the cellulose ethers market in France is likely to reach XX million in 2027 from its recorded value of 202.06 million in 2019. This is due to the fact that cellulose ethers are commonly used as additives to modify the viscosity and texture in the cosmetic industry.

Apart from the cosmetics industry, the construction industry is very important to the EU economy. The Italian construction sector is a vital part of the national economy, with its gross value added accounting for 18.7% of GDP. As per ACNE, the national association of construction companies, the construction investment increased 1.7% year-on-year, to about EUR 130 Million in 2019.

Investments in the construction sector continue to grow, driven by the resumption of public works. In 2018, investments in the residential sector value up to US$ 82.6 Million whereas investments in non-residential and public works stood at US$ 46.7 Million and US$ 26.52 Million. The construction sector in Italy is expected to grow during the forecast period driven by government investments in developing public assets and infrastructure.

The growing construction industry in Italy is expected to drive the cellulose ethers market in Italy as they can serve as retarders, water-retaining agents, thickeners and binders in the construction industry. The cellulose ethers market in Italy is likely to reach 116.53 million in 2027 from its recorded value of 97.81 million in 2019.
