Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay Market

The global enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) market is primarily driven by the increasing incidence of chronic diseases such as infectious diseases, vector-borne diseases, cancer, among others.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it has been projected that, by 2020, chronic diseases will account for almost three-quarters of all deaths worldwide, and that 71% of deaths due to ischaemic heart disease (IHD), 75% of deaths due to stroke, and 70% of deaths due to diabetes will occur in developing countries. 

The number of people in the developing world with diabetes will increase by more than 2.5-fold, from 84 million in 1995 to 228 million in 2025. The public health implications of this phenomenon are staggering, and are already becoming apparent. Hence, the rising prevalence of chronic diseases has raised the demand for rapid diagnosis.

The rising geriatric population coupled with an all-time high incidence of chronic diseases has given an impetus to the growth of the global market for ELISA testing. 

There were 703 million persons aged 65 years or over in the world in 2019. The number of older persons is projected to double to 1.5 billion in 2050. Globally, the share of the population aged 65 years or over increased from 6 per cent in 1990 to 9% in 2019.

Moreover, the upswing in demand for enzyme linked immunosorbent assay can also be attributed to the prevalence of infectious diseases across the globe. 

It is estimated that around 9% of the population in the United States has been diagnosed with an infectious disease. Infectious diseases are caused by bacteria, viruses and other organisms and can be spread from person to person, through insect or animal bites, or through contaminated food or water. Some of the most common infectious diseases include HIV/AIDS, influenza, malaria, tuberculosis and hepatitis.

As per the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, there have been approximately 7 million influenza infections in the US in 2018, resulting in an estimated 84,000 hospitalizations. Also, in 2016, around 15.5 million infectious disease diagnosed patients visited hospital settings for primary treatment and disease management.

Unhygienic living conditions, especially in the underdeveloped regions, have also led to the occurrence of diseases and infections. This has brought the global market for ELISA testing under the spotlight of attention.
