On the basis of source, the market is segmented into synthetic and natural. Synthetic is further segmented into Polymers, Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose (ORC) and Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA). Natural segment is further sub segmented into porcine, bovine and avian.

Synthetic wound dressings originally consisted of three types namely Polymers, Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose (ORC) and Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA). In the period of 1990’s, synthetic wound dressings expanded into various group of products which includes hydrogels, tissue adhesives, hydrocolloids, alginates, synthetic foam dressing, silicone meshes, vapor-permeable adhesive films, silver/collagen containing dressing and others. It mainly consisted of two types namely gauze-based dressings and paste bandages such as zinc paste bandage.

Some of the commonly used synthetic polymers for wound healing applications include poly(lactic acid) (PLA), PCL, PLGA, PEO, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and polyurethane (PU) and others. It is used also in regenerative medicine for cartilage, bone, vascular, nerve and ligament repair and restoration, among others.

Oxidized regenerated cellulose (ORC)/collagen/silver-ORC dressings is used to optimize the wound environment and promote development of granulation tissue. Moreover, these dressings have been used to prepare the wound bed prior to skin grafting with positive results. Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid is an antimicrobial and antibiofilm agent in its own right. Based on the characteristics of Ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, it is a potential antimicrobial and antibiofilm agent for use in skin as well as wound care.

Natural segment is further sub segmented into porcine, bovine and avian. In natural, a few remedies to ensure quick healing as well as prevent from getting infection. Porcine wound healing in full-thickness skin defects using Integra with and without fibrin glue with keratinocytes. Avian wounds come in various forms as well as result from many causes. The general principles of wound management used in small animal practice are similar with bird medicine. In addition, avian wound healing has been described in three phases namely maturation, inflammatory and collagen.

Source- Synthetic

The synthetic market was valued at USD 298.79 million in 2018 and the market is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 7.1% in the forecast period to reach a market value of USD YY  million by 2026. Synthetic collagen wound dressing is segmented into Polymers, Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose (ORC) and Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA).

Synthetic wound dressings originally consisted of three types namely Polymers, Oxidized Regenerated Cellulose (ORC) and Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA).

The development of new and effective interventions in wound care remains an area of intense research. Hydroconductive dressings and hydrocellular foam dressings are other technologies that have evolved considerably .

A hydroconductive dressing is considered as a novel class product. It offers a capillary action that lifts and transfers exudate and remains away from the wound surface level. This action allows the covering to lift, hold, and transfer the wound exudate both horizontally and vertically into the covering, where it can absorb 500% of its weight.
