Rise in number of dialysis centers

With rising numbers of End-stage renal disease (ESRD) cases, there is a need for dialysis, hence the number of dialysis centers are increasing. A predominant number of hemodialysis patients undergo treatment in dialysis centers.

The number of dialysis centers has progressively increased in the country, reaching 781 in 2018; they are distributed mainly in the southeast (47%), south (20%), and northeast regions (18%), and only 6% were in the north region.

Dialysis centers were mainly private (72%). Forty-eight percent of the units were hospital based. Most units that assisted patients were reimbursed by either the public system or private health care insurance (70%), whereas 18% and 12% cared only for patients covered by the public system or private health insurance, respectively.

Rising health insurance market has driven the patients towards better medical care and further spending more on medical equipment. The total number of active dialysis centers increased from 2015 to 2016 (726 to 747).

Market Opportunities

With future expansion, collaboration, acquisitions major companies have increased opportunities by boosting employment from growing demand for renal dialysis equipment. Major manufacturers are developing partnerships with healthcare organizations, including hospitals and payers, to enhance customer support. This will increase the long-term growth of the company in the next few years.

Additionally, development of user-friendly and low-cost dialysis products can provide opportunities to the global hemodialysis equipment market. For instance, Baxter’s new Amia PD cycler is a compact, lightweight equipment that connects patient and caregiver. Its new Share Source system is like a GPS that helps staff monitor patients while on the cycler.

Growing preference for home dialysis treatment. Because it is cost saving & time saving technology. End-stage renal disease (ESRD) affects 600,000 Americans, striking over 120,000 people a year, and most of these patients require renal replacement therapy, such as hemodialysis. But just under 2% of patients do home hemodialysis (HHD) today, but a growing number of companies are betting that this number could increase substantially. Bad Homburg, Germany-based dialysis giant Fresenius on February 20th stated that it was a $2bn deal to acquire US-based home dialysis equipment maker NxStage Medical Inc. whose FDA-cleared Solo system allows patients to perform their own HHD without a care partner.

Similarly, Baxter is striving to rise its revenue share of hemodialysis for application in home-care settings.

Launch of New Renal Dialysis Equipment

Following the invention of renal dialysis equipment, manufacturers are focusing on developing new dialysis equipment and aim at launching new products into the market. For instance, in March 2021, Baxter International Inc. received FDA clearance of its next-generation Artificial Kidney 98 (AK 98)dialysis machine, which is designed to be a portable and easy-to-use system to administer hemodialysis (HD) treatments.  With increasing advancement in technology, Renal Dialysis Equipment is likely to contribute growth in the market.

Technological Advancement

Rapid advancements in technology have led to the development of new renal dialysis equipment in the market.

For instance, Baxter launched a new version of its AK 98 hemodialysis (HD) system offering two-way IT connectivity, capabilities to meet the needs of patients with lower weights, and functions that simplify treatment set up and reduce downtime between sessions.

Rising Disposable Income

Rising disposable income is contributing to the growth of the economy, and, at the same time, individuals are able to afford appropriate health treatments The potential for high insurance coverage for healthcare services and increasing disposable income are among factors expected to boost the adoption of the appropriate treatments as well as increase the adoption of the latest technologies.
