Asia-Pacific pregnancy testing market Demand

Asia-Pacific Pregnancy Testing Market is growing at a CAGR of 4.8% during 2022-2029.

2021-09-30

Asia-Pacific pregnancy testing market valued US$ 327.3 million in 2020 and is estimated to reach US YY million in 2029, by growing at a CAGR of 4.8% during 2022-2029.

Asia-Pacific is expected to grow tremendously over the forecast period, due to rising disposable income in developing economies, well-established distribution channels, increased adolescent pregnancy rate, growing prevalence of fertility disorders, and increasing awareness of pregnancy products through strong family planning activities conducted by government organizations.

The presence of government initiatives is expected to drive the market throughout the forecast. For instance, on 1st June 2011, the Government of India launched Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) to eliminate out-of-pocket expenditure on drugs, diet, diagnostics, user charges, referral transport, etc. for pregnant women, sick newborns, and infants.

Also, in 2008, Nishchay, the home-based pregnancy test card (PTC), manufactured by HLL Lifecare Ltd. with the support from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, was launched in all states and Union territories of India. The testing kits were particularly beneficial to the women in rural areas, who otherwise had to travel a longer distance to confirm their pregnancy.

However, home pregnancy test kits have been recalled in Australia after several incidences of false results. This recall in Australia is likely to affect the pregnancy test kit market and will restrain revenue growth to some extent.

China

China's pregnancy testing market is valued at US$81.3 million in 2020 and is estimated to reach US$ YY million in 2028, by growing at a CAGR of 5.4% during 2021-2028.

The OTC pregnancy testing market in China has continued to grow consistently over the past few years.

Some factors such as business expansion, the growth of new distribution channels, and encouragement by market players for self-medication and the development of strong brands have been the driving forces for the growth of the market in China.

Multinational corporations are expected to more aggressively pursue joint alliances with local manufacturers who have established distribution channels in these markets, as to offset the stagnant growth they are facing in their home markets.

As government policy controls OTC usage in hospitals while the demand for OTC keeps rising, retail pharmacies are expected to become the primary channel for the OTC market in China.

There are over 250,000 pharmacies in Chinese counties as of 2016, which account for around 57% of retail pharmacies nationwide and contribute to 72% of OTC sales.

The major distribution channel of OTC selling in China will still be retail brick and mortar shops, as those retail stores accounted for 65% of the total OTC sales in 2019. The retail pharmacy OTC sales growth rate is 7%, almost four times that of internal hospital sales. Among retail pharmacies, their performance at the county level is much more impressive. With the rapid growth of GDP and consumption in Chinese counties, more and more pharmacy chains are entering the regional markets.

Japan

Japan's pregnancy testing market is valued at US$ 62.8 million in 2020 and is estimated to reach US$ YY million in 2028, by growing at a CAGR of 4.5% during 2021-2028.

Japan accounted for a 19.2% market share of the Asia-Pacific pregnancy testing market in 2018 and is anticipated to grow to 19.4% by 2026.

Some of the most common chain pharmacies all across Japan to buy a pregnancy test include Matsumotokiyoshi – Otherwise commonly referred to as “Matsukiyo”, TSURUHA Drug, coco kara fine, SUNDRUG, COSMOS, among others.

Some local drug stores also carry branded pregnancy tests. Alternatively, one can also order a pregnancy test in Japan over the Internet on an online marketplace such as Amazon or Rakuten.

A pregnancy test in Japan will cost about 500 to 2000 JPY depending on the brand and type and can come in test packs of one or two.

In addition, there are two varieties to choose from, analog (regular) or digital, but the function remains the same. The only difference between the two is that the digital kind displays a written message “Pregnant” or “Not Pregnant”, whereas the regular kind displays symbols such as a stripe or a circle accompanied by a chart on the box to decipher the results.
